14 p, 1.1 MB Matching Local Invariant Features with Contextual Information : an Experimental Evaluation / Sidibe, Desire (LGI2P - Ecole des Mines Ales (Nimes, França)) ; Montesinos, Philippe (LGI2P - Ecole des Mines Ales (Nimes, França)) ; Janaqi, Stefan (LGI2P - Ecole des Mines Ales (Nimes, França))
The main advantage of using local invariant features is their local character which yields robustness to occlusion and varying background. Therefore, local features have proved to be a powerful tool for finding correspondences between images, and have been employed in many applications. [...]

The aim of this investigation is to explore the social representations and images that the Spanish press transmits about immigrant women. Inquiring the news appeared in 2004 in the most important national newspapers (El País, El Mundo and ABC) and using a qualitative analysis, this research brings to light the most frequent clichés and social situations of these women in the press, their relations with other social groups, their main roles and their prominence in news. Picone" (Roma, Itàlia))
In this paper a wavelet based model for image de-noising is presented. Wavelet coefficients are modelled as waves that grow while dilating along scales. The model establishes a precise link between corresponding modulus maxima in the wavelet domain and then allows to predict wavelet coefficients at each scale from the first one. [...]

Department of Electrical Engineering) ; Chen, Syuan-Liang (NewSoft Technology Corporation (Taipei, Taiwan)) ; Lin, Jen-Hung (Machvision Inc. (Hsinchu, Taiwan))
In this paper we present a system for the reconstruction of 3D models of architectural scenes from single or multiple uncalibrated images. The partial 3D model of a building is recovered from a single image using geometric constraints such as parallelism and orthogonality, which are likely to be found in most architectural scenes. [...]

In this paper, a new method for image deformation is presented. It is based upon decomposition of the deformation problem into basic physical laws. Unlike other methods that solve a differential or an energetic formulation of the physical laws involved, we encode the basic laws using computational algebraic topology. [...]

Biometrics identification methods proved to be very efficient, more natural and easy for users than traditional methods of human identification. In fact, only biometrics methods truly identify humans, not keys and cards they posses or passwords they should remember. [...]

Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial) ; Ferreira Bastos, Luísa (Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industria (Porto, Portugal). Laboratório de Óptica e Mecânica Experimental)
This paper presents an approach for matching objects in dynamic pedobarography image sequences, based on finite element modeling and modal analysis. The determination of correspondences between nodal objects is improved using optimization techniques and, because the number of elements of each object is not necessary the same, a new algorithm to match excess nodes is proposed. (South Valley University (Qena, Egipte). Mathematics Department) ; Mahdy, Youssef B. (Assuit University, (Assuit, Egipte). Faculty of Computers & Information)
Fractal image compression gives some desirable properties like resolution independence, fast decoding, and very competitive rate-distortion curves. But still suffers from a (sometimes very) high encoding time, depending on the approach being used. [...]
