Just as the nature of the concept has changed in the last decades, the involvement of the intelligentsia has also gone through various phases. In this paper, we shall attempt to describe these successive attitudes and analyse the factors which underlie the changes that have taken place.

El concepto de sociedad civil no es algo establecido por el uso, una realidad o aspiración evidente. Además de existir una gran ambigüedad en su comprensión -lo que a su vez genera malentendidos de todo tipo y divergencias en la práctica-, la reflexión sobre la sociedad civil en China se caracteriza, en un alto grado, por la auto-reflexividad, por lo que los debates se centran en explorar alternativas para la salida de China hacia el mundo, y las potencialidades de ese proceso, y no, como reclaman las naciones modernas, al debate sobre la democracia moderna -gobierno de la mayoría, sistema de representación.
