The microstructure and geochemical composition of foraminiferal tests are valuable archives for the reconstruction of paleoclimatic and paleoecological changes. In this context, the late Miocene Globigerinoides obliquus shells from Faneromeni section (Crete Island) were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging, Energy Dispersive System (EDS) analysis and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy in order to evaluate their potential as paleoenvironmental archives in the eastern Mediterranean. Planktic foraminifera were collected with 150 µm BONGO nets from the upper 200 m water depth at 20 stations across the Mediterranean Sea between 2 May and 2 June 2013. The main aim is to characterize the species distribution and test the covariance between foraminiferal area density (ρA) and seawater carbonate chemistry in a biogeochemical gradient including ultraoligotrophic conditions. (University of Florida. Department of Geological Sciences)
Many applications of the Vostok ice core depend critically on the ability to make stratigraphic ties to marine records in the adjacent Southern Ocean. Here we present oxygen isotopic records from high accumulation rate sites in the South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, collected for the purpose of complementing the recently extended dD record from the Vostok ice core. Fine-scale, paired Mg/Ca-δ18O profiles (Globigerinoides ruber white, sensu lato) from the San Lázaro Basin (SLB) at 25°N in the Northeast Pacific reveal a transition from a predominant presence of tropical/subtropical waters during the last glacial termination (T1) to an increasing influence of fresh and cold California Current waters toward the Holocene. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Accurate reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) is a high research priority, given that it is such a crucial variable in the Earth's climate system. The Mg/Ca composition of Globigerinoides ruber (white) has been calibrated and applied for a number of tropical and extratropical paleo-SST reconstructions, though validation studies of the proxy against instrumental observations are relatively scarce. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Vance, D. (University of Bristol. Department of Earth Sciences) ; Mortyn, P. Graham (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Planktic foraminifera have been used as recorders of the neodymium (Nd) isotopic composition of seawater, although there is still controversy over the precise provenance of the Nd signal. We present an extensive, multispecific plankton tow Nd/Ca data set from several geographic locations (SE Atlantic, NE Atlantic, Norwegian Sea, and western Mediterranean), together with core top samples from the Mediterranean region. Recent work across the Mediterranean Sea has illustrated the salinity and overgrowth effects on planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca, which potentially confound the use of this as a temperature proxy for paleoceanographic reconstructions. [...]
