Institute of Oceanology (Poland))
The increasing influence of Atlantic Water (AW) in the Barents Sea, a process known as "Atlantification", is gradually decreasing sea ice cover in the region. Ongoing global climate warming is likely to be one of its drivers, but to further understand the role of natural variability and the biogeochemical impacts of the inflow of AW into the western Barents Sea, we reconstructed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and primary productivity in Storfjordrenna, a climatically sensitive area south of Spitsbergen, between approximately 13,950 cal yr BP and 1300 cal yr BP. Total lipid and fatty acid concentrations were studied in a late spring-early summer flagellate-dominated bloom in the Weddell Sea. These indicators were considered a good tool for assessing the quality of organic matter settling from surface to deep-water layers (epibenthic water layers). [...]

Biochar is a high carbon material resulting from biomass pyrolysis that, when applied to croplands, can increase soil carbon and soil water retention. Both effects are of critical importance in semi-arid regions, where carbon decline and desertification are the main drivers of soil degradation. [...]

The alkenone unsaturation index, U37K', has now proven its worth as a tool for paleothermometry. U37K' measured in most modern sediments throughout the World Ocean can be translated using established calibrations into realistic, seemingly reliable estimates of mean annual temperature at the sea surface (SST).
