La Europa de principios de siglo se caracteriza, dentro del -ambito artístico, por dos corrientes contrapuestas. Por un lado aquella que representa a la burguesía dominante y tiende a la exaltación de una serie de valores decominónicos, por otro una estético de ruptura que se rebela contra lo superficial, que se distingue por su actitud crítica y la búsqueda de nuevas formas de expresión.
The Europe of the beginning of the century is characterized, within the artistic ambit, by two opposing currents. On the one hand that represents the dominant bourgeoisie and tends to the exaltation of a series of decominónicos values, on the other an aesthetic of rupture that rebels against the superficial, which is distinguished by its critical attitude and the search for new forms of expression.

Ottoman and Turkish perceptions of Europe have commonly been analyzed with an emphasis on the contradictions they embody, and using the frame of a "love and hate relationship. " In this paper I analyze the writings of the late Ottoman intellectual Ahmed Midhat Efendi who not only produced many works on Europe that exemplify these inconsistencies, but also acknowledged and analyzed his self-contradictory attitudes towards Europe.
