The article describes the Human Relations Area Files, an immense archive of ethnographic materials begun in 1937; today information is still being processed for its expansion. The article maintains that the utility of this archive for comparative research, and for transcultural knowledge in general, is independent of the methodological and theoretical orientations that guided its creation.
