Pigs possess a microbiota in the upper respiratory tract that includes Haemophilus parasuis. Pigs are also considered the reservoir of influenza viruses and infection with this virus commonly results in increased impact of bacterial infections, including those by H. [...]

The present study characterized the homologous and heterologous immune response in type-I porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection. Two experiments were conducted: in experiment 1, eight pigs were inoculated with PRRSV strain 3262 and 84 days post-inoculation (dpi) they were challenged with either strain 3262 or strain 3267 and followed for the next 14 days (98 dpi). Gene expression analysis has proven to be a very useful tool to gain knowledge of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of diseases, particularly in the initial or preclinical stages. With the aim of finding new data on the events occurring in the Central Nervous System in animals affected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, a comprehensive genome wide gene expression study was conducted at different time points of the disease on mice genetically modified to model the bovine species brain in terms of cellular prion protein. 8 p, 1.1 MB Is there a direct role for erythrocytes in the immune response? / Morera Capdevila, Davínia (Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina "Vicent Villar Palasí") ; Mackenzie, Simon A. (Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina "Vicent Villar Palasí")
Erythrocytes are highly abundant circulating cells in the vertebrates, which, with the notable exception of mammals, remain nucleated throughout the entire life cycle. The major function associated with these cells is respiratory gas exchange however other functions including interaction with the immune system have been attributed to these cells. [...]

7 p, 840.3 KB Role of wild ruminants in the epidemiology of bluetongue virus serotypes 1, 4 and 8 in Spain / García Bocanegra, Ignacio ; Arenas Montes, Antonio ; Lorca Oró, Cristina (Fundació Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal) ; Pujols i Romeu, Joan (Fundació Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal) ; González, Miguel Ángel ; Napp Avelli, Sebastián (Fundació Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal) ; Gómez Guillamón, Félix ; Zorrilla, Irene ; San Miguel, Elena ; Arenas, Antonio
Although the importance of wild ruminants as potential reservoirs of bluetongue virus (BTV) has been suggested, the role played by these species in the epidemiology of BT in Europe is still unclear. We carried out a serologic and virologic survey to assess the role of wild ruminants in the transmission and maintenance of BTV in Andalusia (southern Spain) between 2006 and 2010. [...]
