An understanding of current political resistance in the Arab world requires a historical perspective in order to avoid a simplistic analysis of political changes in North Africa since early 2011. While the colonial and postcolonial periods have both witnessed a broad range of forms of resistance, Orientalist stereotypes have provided a static view of the Arab world focused on religion as the primary explanation, in contrast to the tremendous dynamism that characterizes Western domination from the early twentieth century to the present, as the example of Morocco shows.
