55 p, 1.9 MB Contributions of age groups and causes of death to the sex gap in lifespan variation in Europe / Zazueta-Borboa, Jesús-Daniel (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute-KNAW) ; Aburto, José Manuel (University of Oxford) ; Permanyer, Iñaki (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Zarulli, Virginia (University of Southern Denmark) ; Janssen, Fanny (University of Groningen)
Much less is known about the sex gap in lifespan variation, which reflects inequalities in the length of life, than about the sex gap in life expectancy (average length of life). We examined the contributions of age groups and causes of death to the sex gap in lifespan variation for 28 European countries, grouped into five European regions. [...]

(University of Toronto) ; Steinert, Janina Isabel (University of Munich) ; Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics
Reducing the adolescent birth rate is paramount in achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, given that pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of mortality among young women aged 15-19. [...]

Background: Indicators of lifespan inequality, such as the life table entropy or variance of age at death, provide a measure of inequality in the timing of death. A range of indicators of relative and absolute inequality exist, and their evolution over time and sensitivity to changes in age-specific mortality have been studied. [...]

A rich tradition exists on measuring human capital in historical societies through basic mathematical skills using the method of age heaping. In this article, we novelty propose to calculate it also through the analysis of the consistency in individual consecutive age declaration statements in five towns of Baix Llobregat's county (Barcelona, Spain) during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. (Max-Planck-Institut für Demografische Forschung) ; Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics
This is the first study to compare population estimates for the oldest old in administrative data and census data in Brazil. Age misreporting resulted in discrepancies that may have compromised the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. [...]

5 p, 327.7 KB Gender asymmetries in mixed unions / Esteve, Albert ; Batyra, Ewa ; Elwert, Annika ; Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics
An increasing number of people in high-income countries marry or cohabit with partners who were born abroad. Using census microdata for Spain and the United States, Albert Esteve, Annika Elwert and Ewa Batyra examine gender differences in cross-national heterosexual couples regarding country of birth, age, and educational attainment, and find well-differentiated patterns by gender in marital interaction with the foreign population.

At the end of the second decade of the 21st century, Latin American migration to Spain showed a new quantitative increase in flows of such magnitude that we can speak of the existence of a second migratory boom. [...]

13 p, 2.8 MB Assessing the impact of caregiving for older parents on caregivers' health: initial health status and trajectories of physical and mental health among midlife caregivers for parents and parents-in-law in Britain / Zueras Castillo, Pilar (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Grundy, Emily (University of Essex) ; Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics
Assessing the impact of caregiving for older parents on caregivers' health is increasingly important in the context of population changes and curtailment of state provided services. This has been extensively studied but results are inconsistent, possibly reflecting a lack of attention to health-related selection into the caregiver role. [...]

28 p, 4.8 MB Lung cancer mortality trends among women across Spain: the role of birth cohorts in diverging regional patterns / Bramajo, Octavio (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics
Smoking among Spanish women has increased during the last 50 years and is considered by some authors a modern epidemic. However, mortality risk by cohorts may differ at a regional level, given that health inequalities (and the determinants of smoking and its consequences) are regionally patterned. [...]
