16 p, 9.9 MB An Amphisbaenian skull from the European Miocene and the evolution of Mediterranean worm lizards / Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Fortuny Terricabras, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Almécija, Sergio (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Robles Giménez, Josep Maria (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Alba, David M. (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
The evolution of blanid amphisbaenians (Mediterranean worm lizards) is mainly inferred based on molecular studies, despite their fossils are common in Cenozoic European localities. This is because the fossil record exclusively consists in isolated elements of limited taxonomic value. [...]

30 p, 7.0 MB An archosauromorph dominated ichnoassemblage in fluvial settings from the late Early Triassic of the Catalan Pyrenees (NE Iberian Peninsula) / Mujal Grané, Eudald (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Fortuny Terricabras, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Oms Llobet, Oriol (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; López, José Angel (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia)
The vertebrate recovery after the end-Permian mass extinction can be approached through the ichnological record, which is much more abundant than body fossils. The late Olenekian (Early Triassic) tetrapod ichnoassemblage of the Catalan Pyrenean Basin is the most complete and diverse of this age from Western Tethys. [...]

23 p, 1.3 MB Lizards and amphisbaenians (Reptilia, Squamata) from the late Eocene of Sossís (Catalonia, Spain) / Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Evans, Susan E. (University College London. Department of Cell and Developmental Biology)
A new diverse late Eocene lizard and amphisbaenian assemblage from the classical mammal locality of Sossís (Catalonia, Spain) is described. It represents the first Paleogene lizard assemblage from Spain and the first late Eocene lizard locality from the Iberian Peninsula. [...]

22 p, 1.5 MB First early Eocene lizards from Spain and a study of the compositional changes between late Mesozoic and early Cenozoic Iberian lizard assemblages / Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Lizard and amphisbaenian fossil material is described for the first time from early Eocene localities in Spain, more specifically from Catalonia (north-eastern Iberian Peninsula). Material is fragmentary and scarce, but diagnostic enough to provide a first approach to the composition of lizard assemblages. [...]

10 p, 3.2 MB First direct archosauromorph remains from the Early-Middle Triassic transition of the Iberian Peninsula / Ezcurra, Martín D. (Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales. Sección Paleontología de Vertebrados) ; Fortuny Terricabras, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Mujal Grané, Eudald (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
This paper discusses the taxonomic affinities of three isolated teeth discovered in the Buntsandstein facies of the Catalan Coastal Ranges and central-eastern Pyrenean basins that crop out in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. [...]

5 p, 188.4 KB Early Miocene dispersal of the lizard Varanus into Europe : reassessment of vertebral material from Spain / Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Rage, Jean-Claude (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle. Département Histoire de la Terre) ; Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Alba, David M. (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Iberovaranus Hoffstetter, 1969 was erected as a monotypic genus of varanine varanid lizard on the basis of a single trunk vertebra from the Miocene of Spain. Thanks to the study of the holotype, as well as of a still undescribed cervical vertebra from the same locality, we show that the vertebral morphology of Iberovaranus is contained within the known variability of Varanus. 7 p, 1.0 MB A potential record of a procolophonid parareptile from the Triassic of the Iberian Peninsula / Fortuny, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Bolet Mercadal, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Sellés, Albert G. (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Galobart Lorente, Àngel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Cranial and postcranial remains from the Middle Triassic of the Northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula are reported and tentatively assigned to Procolophonidae. The finding is the first occurrence of a procolophonid parareptile in the Iberian Peninsula, representing the southernmost record of the group in Europe. [...]

The remarkable squamate fossil record from the Iberian Peninsula represents an invaluable opportunity to unveil the evolutionary history of lizards and amphisbaenians during a long time span (Jurassic-Quaternary) in a key area of intermittent contact between Europe and Africa. [...]

1 This module provides a deep view in the evolution and diversity of continental biotas along the geological time. It is divided in four different topics (Paleobotany, Paleoherpetology, Paleomammalogy and Paleoprimatology and Human Evolution) combining the classical hypothesis with the most recent discoveries and updated theories in the evolutionary history of plants, dinosaurs and primates.
