In France there is a group of tens of thousands of people who speak Catalan and define themselves as "Catalan gypsies". Its origin lies in Catalonia, especially in the region of Girona. They began to take root in Roussillon at the end of the eighteenth century as a result of a law made by King Charles III in 1783, which allowed them to travel after centuries of interdictions, and also spurred by the more favorable conditions they found in France following the 1789 Revolution.
