19 p, 1.7 MB Slowing deforestation in Indonesia follows declining oil palm expansion and lower oil prices / Gaveau, David L. A. (The TreeMap) ; Locatelli, Bruno (Université Montpellier) ; Salim, Mohammad A. (The TreeMap) ; Husnayaen, None (The TreeMap) ; Manurung, Timer (Auriga Nusantara) ; Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Angelsen, Arild (Norwegian University of Life Sciences. School of Economics and Business) ; Meijaard, Erik (University of Kent. Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology) ; Sheil, Douglas (Wageningen University)
Much concern about tropical deforestation focuses on oil palm plantations, but their impacts remain poorly quantified. Using nation-wide interpretation of satellite imagery, and sample-based error calibration, we estimated the impact of large-scale (industrial) and smallholder oil palm plantations on natural old-growth ("primary") forests from 2001 to 2019 in Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer. 6 p, 1.5 MB A threshold method for robust and fast estimation of land-surface phenology using Google Earth Engine / Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Verger, Aleixandre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Yin, Gaofei (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Cloud-based platforms are changing the way of analyzing remotely sensed data by providing high computational power and rapid access to massive volumes of data. Several types of studies use cloud-based platforms for global-scale analyses, but the number of land-surface phenology (LSP) studies that use cloud-based platforms is low. [...]

10 p, 1.2 MB A broadband green-red vegetation index for monitoring gross primary production phenology / Yin, Gaofei (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Verger, Aleixandre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Filella, Iolanda (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
The chlorophyll/carotenoid index (CCI) is increasingly used for remotely tracking the phenology of photosynthesis. However, CCI is restricted to few satellites incorporating the 531nm band. This study reveals that the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) broadband green reflectance (band 4) is significantly correlated with this xanthophyll-sensitive narrowband (band 11) (R2 = 0:98, p < 0:001), and consequently, the broadband green-red vegetation index GRVI-computed with MODIS band 1 and band 4-is significantly correlated with CCI-computed with MODIS band 1 and band 11 (R2 = 0:97, p < 0:001). Monitoring the phenological responses of deciduous forests to climate is important, due to the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events associated with climate change and global warming, which will in turn affect vegetation seasonality. [...]

The high spatial resolution and revisit time of Sentinel-2A/B tandem satellites allow a potentially improved retrieval of land surface phenology (LSP). The biome and regional characteristics, however, greatly constrain the design of the LSP algorithms. [...]

High-quality retrieval of land surface phenology (LSP) is increasingly important for understanding the effects of climate change on ecosystem function and biosphere-atmosphere interactions. We analyzed four state-of-the-art phenology methods: threshold, logistic-function, moving-average and first derivative based approaches, and retrieved LSP in the North Hemisphere for the period 1999-2017 from Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) SPOT-VEGETATION and PROBA-V leaf area index (LAI) 1 km V2. The accurate estimation of photosynthetic phenology using vegetation indices (VIs) is important for measuring the interannual variation of atmospheric CO2 concentrations, but the relative performances of structural and physiological VIs remain unclear. [...]

10 p, 1.2 MB Spatial variance of spring phenology in temperate deciduous forests is constrained by biogeographical conditions of temperature, light and aridity / Peaucelle, Marc (Universiteit Gent. CAVElab) ; Janssens, Ivan (Universiteit Antwerpen. Departement Biologie) ; Stocker, Benjamin. (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Fu, Yongshuo H.. (Beijing Normal University. College of Water Sciences) ; Molowny-Horas, Roberto (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Ciais, Philippe (Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Leaf unfolding in temperate forests is driven by spring temperature, but little is known about the spatial variance of that temperature dependency. Here we use in situ leaf unfolding observations for eight deciduous tree species to show that the two factors that control chilling (number of cold days) and heat requirement (growing degree days at leaf unfolding, GDDreq) only explain 30% of the spatial variance of leaf unfolding. [...]

Land surface phenology has been widely retrieved although no consensus exists on the optimal satellite dataset and the method to extract phenology metrics. This study is the first comprehensive comparison of vegetation variables and methods to retrieve land surface phenology for 1999-2017 time series of Copernicus Global Land products derived from SPOT-VEGETATION and PROBA-V data. School of Biological and Environmental Sciences)
Oil palm is rapidly expanding in Southeast Asia and represents one of the major drivers of deforestation in the region. This includes both industrial-scale and smallholder plantations, the management of which entails specific challenges, with either operational scale having its own particular social and environmental challenges. 11.1 MB Spatio-temporal variability of vegetation phenology and its drivers at global scale / Descals, Adrià ; Peñuelas, Josep, dir. ; Verger Ten, Aleixandre, dir.

Phenology is the study of the timing of periodic life-cycle events in plants and animals, as well as how seasonal changes in climatic factors affect these events. In recent decades, temperature has increased, leading to changes in the timing of leaf phenophases and the lengthening of the photosynthetically growing season. [...]
