18 p, 424.4 KB Living arrangements across households in Europe / Liu, Chia ; Esteve, Albert
This chapter explores living arrangements across 21 European countries. Globally, European living arrangements are characterised by uniquely high levels of single-person households, the predominance of nuclear families, and low levels of intergenerational co-residence between adult children and their parents (Eurostat 2015; United Nations 2018). [...]
The diversity of living arrangements in Europe is the result of deep historical roots of family systems that trace back to preindustrial times (Hajnal 1982). The structural or cultural nature of this diversity has been debated since the late nineteenth century. [...]
This chapter provides an account of Europe's regional diversity in living arrangements. A traditional way to approach the study of family diversity is by using the family as a unit of analysis. Given the nature of our data, we take an 'individual approach' in which we use the individual as a unit of analysis and classify the respondents by their living arrangements. [...]

Marriage has not been, historically, a major reason for people to migrate across borders. Instead, most people migrate for economic reasons in search of land, a better job, or more opportunity. In recent decades, there has been increased international migration for family reasons to reunite with emigrant kin, to seek refuge from violence, to escape famine and natural disaster or simply to retire to a sunny paradise. [...]
This thesis aims to determine if the educational composition of couples contributes to widening or narrowing social inequality in Latin America. To this end, this thesis has addressed the relationship of family and inequality through three questions, each focused on one dimension of inequality: how have homogamy education and marriage barriers evolved over the last four decades in Latin America and the United States of America? -segregation or social mobility (macrosocial approach); can changes in educational homogamy over time explain changes in household income inequality? -income inequality (meso approach); do men's economic and social resources affect women's labor status? -power differences (micro focus) The results of this research have corroborated that the educational composition of couples influences social inequality in the Latin American region. Marriage market polarization in the time of college educational expansion Are societies becoming more polarized between college-educated and non-college-educated people? Is the force of homogamy generating more egalitarian unions at the cost of more polarized societies? In this paper, we examine patterns of assortative mating to investigate the extent to which the force of homogamy (the propensity to marry within the same educational group), the expansion of college education and the gender gap in education are contributing to polarization in the marriage market between college- and non-college-educated populations worldwide.
