En els darrers anys les eines digitals s'han convertit en habituals en el món de la paleontologia i s'han integrat en bona part de la recerca que es porta a terme. Aquestes eines han significat la digitalització de mostres paleontològiques usant diferents eines tals com la fotogrametria, aparells làsers i LiDAR's, i d'altres com la tomografia i la microtomografia de raigs X.
