Background and Purpose: Iron overload has been associated with greater oxidative stress and brain injury in experimental cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. This study investigates as a primary objective whether high serum ferritin levels, as index of increased cellular iron stores, are associated with poor functional outcome, hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and brain edema after treatment with tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in patients with acute ischemic stroke, and as a secondary objective by measuring biomarkers of excitotoxicity, inflammation and blood brain barrier disruption, the mechanisms potentially associated with the iron overload-related damage in these patients.
