Measuring in situ soil fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) continuously at high frequency requires appropriate technology. We tested the combination of a commercial automated soil CO2 flux chamber system (LI-8100A) with a CH4 and N2O analyzer (Picarro G2308) in a tropical rainforest for 4 months. [...]

Most studies of the northern hemisphere carbon cycle based on atmospheric CO2 concentration have focused on spring and autumn, but the climate change impact on summer carbon cycle remains unclear. Here we used atmospheric CO2 record from Point Barrow (Alaska) to show that summer CO2 drawdown between July and August, a proxy of summer carbon uptake, is significantly negatively correlated with terrestrial temperature north of 50°N interannually during 1979–2012. Department of Biology) ; Campioli, Matteo (University of Antwerp. Department of Biology)
Climate warming is substantially shifting the leaf phenological events of plants, and thereby impacting on their individual fitness and also on the structure and functioning of ecosystems. Previous studies have largely focused on the climate impact on spring phenology, and to date the processes underlying leaf senescence and their associated environmental drivers remain poorly understood. Elevated CO₂ concentrations increase photosynthesis and, potentially, net ecosystem production (NEP), meaning a greater CO₂ uptake. Climate, nutrients and ecosystem structure, however, influence the effect of increasing CO₂. [...]

Temporal variability in ecological processes has attracted the attention of many disciplines in ecology, which has resulted in the development of several quantitative indices. The coefficient of variation (CV = standard deviation × mean−1) is still one of the most commonly used indices to assess temporal variability, despite being known to present several problems on its assessment (e. Soil nutrient availability has a strong influence on the fate of soil carbon (C) during microbial decomposition, contributing to Earth’s C balance. While nutrient availability itself can impact microbial physiology and C partitioning between biomass and respiration during soil organic matter decomposition, the availability of labile C inputs may mediate the response of microorganisms to nutrient additions. The Paris Agreement is based on emission scenarios that move from a sluggish phase-out of fossil fuels to large-scale late-century negative emissions. Alternative pathways of early deployment of negative emission technologies need to be considered to ensure that climate targets are reached safely and sustainably.

46 p, 3.4 MB Vertical variation in photosynthetic parameters in two different tropical forest ecosystems / Knaepen, Wouter ; Janssens, Ivan A. (Universiteit Antwerpen) ; Verryckt, Lore (Universiteit Antwerpen) ; Universiteit Antwerpen Plant and Vegetation Ecology
Forests contribute to the carbon balance as the largest vegetative sink for atmospheric carbon (CO2). Anthropogenic emissions are counteracted by carbon sequestration in trees, but nutrients could be limiting photosynthesis and the effect could possibly be not as large as believed. [...]
