9 p, 3.4 MB Autumn canopy senescence has slowed down with global warming since the 1980s in the Northern Hemisphere / Zhang, Yichen (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Hong, Songbai (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Liu, Qiang (University of Antwerp. Department of Biology) ; Huntingford, Chris (UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Rossi, Sergio (Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Département des Sciences Fondamentales) ; Myneni, Ranga B. (Boston University. Department of Earth and Environment) ; Piao, Shilong (Chinese Academy of Sciences. Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research)
Climate change strongly impact vegetation phenology, with considerable potential to alter land-atmosphere carbon dioxide exchange and terrestrial carbon cycle. In contrast to well-studied spring leaf-out, the timing and magnitude of autumn senescence remains poorly understood. [...]

10 p, 3.6 MB Climatic warming increases spatial synchrony in spring vegetation phenology across the Northern Hemisphere / Liu, Qiang (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Piao, Shilong (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Fu, Yongshuo H.. (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Gao, Mengdi (Sino-French Institute for Earth System Science) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Janssens, Ivan (University of Antwerp. Department of Biology)
Climatic warming has advanced spring phenology across the Northern Hemisphere, but the spatial variability in temperature sensitivity of spring phenology is substantial. Whether spring phenology will continue to advance uniformly at latitudes has not yet been investigated. [...]

(Boston University. Department of Earth and Environment) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Wang, Tao (Zhongguo ke xue yuan. Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research)
While climate warming reduces the occurrence of frost events, the warming-induced lengthening of the growing season of plants in the Northern Hemisphere may actually induce more frequent frost days during the growing season (GSFDs, days with minimum temperature < 0 °C). [...]

Wheat, rice, maize, and soybean provide two-thirds of human caloric intake. Assessing the impact of global temperature increase on production of these crops is therefore critical to maintaining global food supply, but different studies have yielded different results. [...]

Recent warming significantly advanced leaf onset in the northern hemisphere. This signal cannot be accurately reproduced by current models parameterized by daily mean temperature (Tmean). Here using in situ observations of leaf unfolding dates (LUDs) in Europe and the United States, we show that the interannual anomalies of LUD during 1982-2011 are triggered by daytime (Tmax) more than by nighttime temperature (Tmin).
