This study provides evidence that ambient seawater density influences calcification and may account for the observed planktonic foraminifera shell mass increase during glacial times. Volumes of weighed fossil Globigerina bulloides shells were accurately determined using X-ray Computer Tomography and were combined with water density reconstructions from Mg/Ca and δO measurements to estimate the buoyancy force exerted on each shell. Bringing insights from Indigenous and local knowledge into climate change research requires addressing the transferability, integration, and scalability of this knowledge. Using a review of research on place-based observations of climate change impacts, we explore ways to address these challenges. [...]

The microstructure and geochemical composition of foraminiferal tests are valuable archives for the reconstruction of paleoclimatic and paleoecological changes. In this context, the late Miocene Globigerinoides obliquus shells from Faneromeni section (Crete Island) were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging, Energy Dispersive System (EDS) analysis and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy in order to evaluate their potential as paleoenvironmental archives in the eastern Mediterranean. Many applications of the Vostok ice core depend critically on the ability to make stratigraphic ties to marine records in the adjacent Southern Ocean. Here we present oxygen isotopic records from high accumulation rate sites in the South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, collected for the purpose of complementing the recently extended dD record from the Vostok ice core. Fine-scale, paired Mg/Ca-δ18O profiles (Globigerinoides ruber white, sensu lato) from the San Lázaro Basin (SLB) at 25°N in the Northeast Pacific reveal a transition from a predominant presence of tropical/subtropical waters during the last glacial termination (T1) to an increasing influence of fresh and cold California Current waters toward the Holocene.
