33 p, 6.0 MB A redescription of Trachelosaurus fischeri from the Buntsandstein (Middle Triassic) of Bernburg, Germany: the first European Dinocephalosaurus-like marine reptile and its systematic implications for long-necked early archosauromorphs / Spiekman, Stephan N. F. (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Ezcurra, Martín D. (Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales. Sección Paleontología de Vertebrados) ; Rytel, Adam (Institute of Paleobiology Warsaw) ; Wang, Wei (Key Laboratory of Vertebrate Evolution and Human Origins of Chinese Academy of Sciences) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Buchwitz, Michael (Museum für Naturkunde Magdeburg) ; Schoch, Rainer (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart)
Some of the earliest members of the archosaur-lineage (i. e. , non-archosauriform archosauromorphs) are characterised by an extremely elongated neck. Recent fossil discoveries from the Guanling Formation (Middle Triassic) of southern China have revealed a dramatic increase in the known ecomorphological diversity of these extremely long-necked archosauromorphs, including the fully marine and viviparous Dinocephalosaurus orientalis. Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of a lower to middle Permian terrestrial composite succession from the Catalan Pyrenees : Implications for the evolution of tetrapod ecosystems in equatorial Pangaea / De Jaime-Soguero, Chabier (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Oms, O (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Bolet, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Dinarès-Turell, Jaume (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV)) ; Ibañez-Insa, Jordi (Geosciences Barcelona) ; Fortuny, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Tetrapod diversity in Permian terrestrial ecosystems of southwestern Europe is poorly recorded by bone specimens, but it is better represented by an important tetrapod ichnological record that is relevant to our understanding of vertebrate communities in equatorial Pangaea. [...]

14 p, 1.5 MB Decapitation in the long-necked Triassic marine reptile Tanystropheus / Spiekman, Stephan N. F. (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Extreme neck elongation was a common evolutionary strategy among Mesozoic marine reptiles, occurring independently in several lineages1,2. Despite its evolutionary success, such an elongate neck might have been particularly susceptible to predation1, but direct evidence for this possibility has been lacking. [...]

A new medium-sized moradisaurine captorhinid eureptile from the Permian of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean) and correlation with the co-occurring ichnogenus Hyloidichnus / Matamales Andreu, Rafel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Galobart, Àngel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Fortuny, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Moradisaurine captorhinid eureptiles are one of the best-known groups of Permian herbivorous tetrapods. Moradisaurines, with several rows of teeth on the maxillae and jaws, first appeared in the Cisuralian and went extinct at the end of the Lopingian; they were especially abundant in the equatorial latitudes of Pangaea. 71 p, 4.8 MB The Middle Triassic vertebrate deposits of Kupferzell (Germany) : Palaeoenvironmental evolution of complex ecosystems / Schoch, Rainer (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Seegis, Dieter (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
In 1977, within 3 months of excavation, a 500 m spanning road-cut near Kupferzell (southern Germany) produced a total of ~30,000 vertebrate remains from the Middle Triassic Lower Keuper. The bulk of the material stems from two temnospondyl amphibians, Gerrothorax pulcherrimus (~70%) and Mastodonsaurus giganteus (~30%), with the pseudosuchian archosaur Batrachotomus kupferzellensis ranging first among the other remains. [...]

The Guadalupian was a key epoch for the evolution of tetrapod faunas. It includes the earliest unambiguous occurrences of therapsids and stereospondyls (groups that later became dominant in terrestrial and freshwater environments, respectively) and the late Capitanian mass extinction event. [...]

31 p, 7.0 MB Feeding habits of the Middle Triassic pseudosuchian Batrachotomus kupferzellensis from Germany and palaeoecological implications for archosaurs / Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Foth, Christian (University of Fribourg. Department of Geosciences) ; Maxwell, Erin (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Seegis, Dieter (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Schoch, Rainer (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart)
Bite traces on fossil bones are key to deciphering feeding ecology and trophic interactions of vertebrate past ecosystems. However, similarities between traces produced by different carnivorous taxa with similar dentitions, and misidentifications due to equifinality, hinder confident identifications of the bite makers. [...]

(Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart) ; Cooper, Samuel L. A. (Hohenheim University. Department of Paleontology) ; Mujal, Eudald (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Miedema, Feiko (Hohenheim University. Department of Paleontology) ; Serafini, Giovanni (Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia. Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche) ; Schweigert, Günter (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart)
Large vertebrate carcasses contain significant amounts of nutrients that upon death are transferred from the water column to the benthos, enriching the immediate environment. The organisms exploiting these ephemeral resources vary as the carcass decays, creating an ecological succession: mobile scavengers arrive first, followed by enrichment opportunists, sulfophilic taxa, and lastly reef species encrusting the exposed bones. (Oriol) (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Galobart, Àngel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Fortuny, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
The Cisuralian-Guadalupian (early-middle Permian) was a period of climate transition between the Carboniferous icehouse conditions to the latest Permian-Early Triassic hothouse. The landmasses had coalesced in the supercontinent Pangaea and the climate was progressively becoming more arid, especially in a belt over the palaeoequator. [...]
