Spatio-temporal downscaling of gridded crop model yield estimates based on machine learning / Folberth, Christian (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) ; Baklanov, Artem (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) ; Balkovic, Juraj (Comenius University in Bratislava. Department of Soil Science) ; Skalský, Rastislav (National Agricultural and Food Centre, Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute) ; Khabarov, Nikolay (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) ; Obersteiner, Michael (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis)
Global gridded crop models (GGCMs) are essential tools for estimating agricultural crop yields and externalities at large scales, typically at coarse spatial resolutions. Higher resolution estimates are required for robust agricultural assessments at regional and local scales, where the applicability of GGCMs is often limited by low data availability and high computational demand. Even if global warming is kept below +2°C, European agriculture will be significantly impacted. Soil degradation may amplify these impacts substantially and thus hamper crop production further. We quantify biophysical consequences and bracket uncertainty of +2°C warming on calories supply from 10 major crops and vulnerability to soil degradation in Europe using crop modeling. [...]

The Paris Agreement is based on emission scenarios that move from a sluggish phase-out of fossil fuels to large-scale late-century negative emissions. Alternative pathways of early deployment of negative emission technologies need to be considered to ensure that climate targets are reached safely and sustainably.

Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) have continued to increase whereas atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen has declined in Europe and the USA during recent decades. Using time series of flux observations from 23 forests distributed throughout Europe and the USA, and generalised mixed models, we found that forest-level net ecosystem production and gross primary production have increased by 1% annually from 1995 to 2011.
