Measuring poverty in multidimensional contexts / Permanyer, Inaki (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics)
When measuring multidimensional poverty it is reasonable to expect that the trade-offs between variable pairs can differ depending on whether the concerned pairs are complements or substitutes. Yet, currently existing approaches based on deprivation count distributions unrealistically assume that all pairs of variables are related in the same way—an unfortunate circumstance that undermines the possibilities of identifying the poor, aggregating their poverty levels and modeling non-trivial interactions between variables in highly flexible ways. Educational assortative mating as a determinant of changing household income inequality : a 21-country study / Boertien, Diederik (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Permanyer, Inaki (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics)
Despite the intuitive notion that educational homogamy matters for the distribution of economic resources across households, existing research finds that changes in educational homogamy have had little impact on inequality between households. [...]

15 p, 2.9 MB The Subnational Human Development Index Database / Smits, Jeroen (Radboud University) ; Permanyer, Inaki (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics)
In this paper we describe the Subnational Human Development Database. This database contains for the period 1990-2017 for 1625 regions within 161 countries the national and subnational values of the Subnational Human Development Index (SHDI), for the three dimension indices on the basis of which the SHDI is constructed - education, health and standard of living --, and for the four indicators needed to create the dimension indices -- expected years of schooling, mean years of schooling, life expectancy and gross national income per capita. Two broad forces shape the patterns of marital sorting by education: structural constraints and assortative mating. However, we lack specific and comparative quantification of the extent of these two forces. [...]

43 p, 954.1 KB A century of change in global education variability and gender differences in education / Permanyer, Inaki ; Boertien, Diederik
This article shows how overall education variability can be decomposed in four clearly interpretable components (variability among women and men, educational advantage favoring women and favoring men) and documents how these components have evolved over time in the world and its regions from 1950 to 2010 (with projections until 2040). 43 p, 954.1 KB Global trends in lifespan inequality : 1950-2015 / Permanyer, Inaki ; Scholl, Nathalie
Using data from the UN World Population Prospects, we document global trends in lifespan inequality from 1950 until 2015. Our findings indicate that (i) there has been a sustained decline in overall lifespan inequality, (ii) adult lifespan variability has also declined, but some plateaus and trend reversals have been identified, (iii) lifespan inequality among the elderly has increased virtually everywhere, (iv) most of the world variability in age-at-death can be attributed within-country variability. 49 p, 1008.5 KB Longevity and lifespan variation by educational attainment in Spain : 1960-2015 / Permanyer, Inaki ; Spijker, Jeroen ; Blanes, Amand ; Rentería, Elisenda
For a long time, studies of socioeconomic gradients in health have limited their attention to between-group comparisons. Yet, ignoring the differences that might exist within groups and focusing on group-specific life expectancy levels and trends alone, one might arrive at overly simplistic conclusions. [...]

In a search for determinants of societal levels of income inequality, scholars have suggested that homogamy within marriages and cohabiting relationships is a potentially important driver of inequality. [...]
In a second stage of the analysis we examine why changes in educational assortative mating mattered relatively little for changes in income inequality. A major hypothesis proposed in earlier research is that changes in educational homogamy have not been large enough to affect income inequality. [...]

In this paper we categorize that variable as 'uncertainly bounded' and study the corresponding methodological and substantive implications for our understanding of lifespan variation. [...]

The existing relationship between polarization, socioeconomic stability and economic growth has contributed to motivating the interest in the study of polarization. [...]

In this chapter, we trace the geography of unmarried cohabitation in the Americas on an unprecedented geographical scale in family demography. We present the percentage of partnered women aged 25-29 in cohabitation across more than 19,000 local units of 39 countries, from Canada to Argentina, at two points in time, 2000 and 2010. [...]

This thesis explores the importance of co-residence patterns of unemployed individuals as support mechanisms against household joblessness and poverty and social exclusion. It exploits two main data sources: the European Union Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) which is the main data source of the EU for the labour market statistics and the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) which provides comparable multidimensional data on poverty and social exclusion across Europe. Polarization indices presented up to now have only focused their attention on the distribution of income/wealth. However, in many circumstances income is not the only relevant dimension that might be the cause of social conflict, so it is very important to have a social polarization index able to cope with alternative dimensions.
