16 p, 2.3 MB Iron-loaded transferrin (Tf) is detrimental whereas iron-free Tf confers protection against brain ischemia by modifying blood Tf saturation and subsequent neuronal damage / Gregorio-Rocasolano Barbany, Núria de (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol) ; Martí Sistac, Octavi (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Ponce, Jovita (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol) ; Castelló Ruiz, María (Institut d'Investigació Sanitària La Fe) ; Millán Torné, Mònica (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol. Despite transferrin being the main circulating carrier of iron in body fluids, and iron overload conditions being known to worsen stroke outcome through reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced damage, the contribution of blood transferrin saturation (TSAT) to stroke brain damage is unknown. [...]

Brain ischaemia (stroke) triggers an intense inflammatory response predominately mediated by the accumulation of inflammatory cells and mediators in the ischaemic brain. In this context, regulatory T (Treg) cells, a subpopulation of CD4 + T cells with immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties, are activated in the late stages of the disease. [...]

16 p, 2.9 MB In Vivo Theranostics at the Peri-Infarct Region in Cerebral Ischemia / Agulla, Jesús (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Brea, David (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol) ; Campos, Francisco (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Sobrino, Tomás (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Argibay, Bárbara (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Al-Soufi, Wajih (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Blanco, Miguel (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Castillo, José (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) ; Ramos-Cabrer, Pedro (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela)
The use of theranostics in neurosciences has been rare to date because of the limitations imposed on the free delivery of substances to the brain by the blood-brain barrier. Here we report the development of a theranostic system for the treatment of stroke, a leading cause of death and disability in developed countries. [...]

11 p, 1.4 MB Study of protein expresion in peri-infarct tissue after cerebral ischemia / Brea, David (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Agulla, Jesús (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Staes, An (Ghent University) ; Gevaert,Kris (Ghent University) ; Campos, Francisco (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Sobrino, Tomás (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Blanco, Miguel (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Dávalos, Antoni (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol) ; Castillo, José (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela) ; Ramos-Cabrer, Pedro (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela)
In this work, we report our study of protein expression in rat peri-infarct tissue, 48 h after the induction of permanent focal cerebral ischemia. Two proteomic approaches, gel electrophoresis with mass spectrometry and combined fractional diagonal chromatography (COFRADIC), were performed using tissue samples from the periphery of the induced cerebral ischemic lesions, using tissue from the contra-lateral hemisphere as a control.
