Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly toxic chemical capable of causing severe health issues. Due to its environmental impact, it is critical to create effective methods for its monitoring. Inkjet printing technology has become an alternative for sensor fabrication because it is an economic, fast, and reproducible method for mass producing micro-electrodes. [...]

A heterogeneous respirometer (HR) was coupled for the first time to a microelectrode monitoring system specifically designed for dissolved oxygen (DO) measuring within the biofilm. Monitoring of the oxygen concentration in the gas and liquid phases was complemented with pioneer monitoring of DO performed simultaneously and continuously at multiple biofilm depths in a linear array of eleven gold-disk electrodes of 50 µm-diameter. The Functional structure of infinitive relatives in Romance : consequences for the cartographic approach
/
Villalba, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
Relative clauses have been a major concern in syntax, semantics, acquisition, and processing studies, however, the focus has been placed, for obvious reasons, on finite prototypical cases. In this paper, we are moving to a less explored terrain, infinitive relatives, with three main goals in mind. [...]

Bridging strength, monotonicity, and word order choices in Catalan
/
Brunetti, Lisa (Université de Paris) ;
Mayol, Laia (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) ;
Villalba, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
Three experimental studies are presented testing the choice of a left or a right dislocation in Catalan, depending on the bridging relation between the dislocate and its antecedent. We make the hypothesis that the stronger the anaphoric link between the dislocate and its antecedent, the more appropriate a right dislocation is, whereas the opposite is true for left dislocation. A novel sensing device for simultaneous dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH monitoring specially designed for biofilm profiling is presented in this work. This device enabled the recording of instantaneous DO and pH dynamic profiles within biofilms, improving the tools available for the study and the characterization of biological systems. [...]

The Focus-background articulation in Spanish qualitative binominal NPs
/
Villalba, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
The goal of this article is to show that, unlike recent analyses of the qualitative binominal NP construction (QBNP) that idiot of a doctor/el idiota del médico, Spanish QBNPs require an analysis with the following features: (i) the definite article preceding the subject nominal is a fully-fledged determiner, (ii) the predicate-subject final word order is the consequence of predicate focus fronting, (iii) the subject receives background interpretation, and (iv) as a consequence of its interpretation as background, the subject of the construction must be specific, which explains the apparently syntactic restrictions on the size of the nominals occurring in this position. La partición foco-trasfondo en las oraciones interrogativas del catalán y del español : estudio de corpus
/
Planas-Morales, Sílvia (Universitat Rovira i Virgili) ;
[...] Catalan and Spanish express the focus-background (FB) partition of sentence in a very different way (Villalba, 2007, 2011, Leonetti, 2011, Planas-Morales y Villalba, 2015), particularly in interrogative sentences, where Catalan allows expresing the background as a right-dislocate, instead of resorting to deletion (recoverable by means of the resumptive clitic or the verbal agreement).
