Key Laboratory of Humid Sub-tropical Eco-geographical Process)
Aerobic methanotrophs in paddies serve as methane (CH₄) filters and thereby reduce CH₄ emissions. Amending soil with waste products can mitigate CH₄ emissions in crops, but little is known about the impacts of amendments with steel slag and biochar on the populations and activities of aerobic methanotrophs in rice cropland. (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Zeng, D. (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals)
Paddy fields are important ecosystems for supporting human life. They are frequently fertilized more than necessary for providing high yields of rice (Oryza sativa), so nutrients are lost by leaching into aquatic ecosystems, which become eutrophic. [...]

Department of Geography and Resource Management) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Wang, Weiqi (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography)
In agriculture, synthetic fertilizers have played a key role in enhancing food production and keeping the world's population adequately fed. China's participation is essential to global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions because it is the largest producer and consumer of synthetic fertilizers. [...]

The increasing success of invasive plant species in wetland areas can threaten their capacity to store carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C, N, and P). Here, we have investigated the relationships between the different stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC), and total C, N, and P pools in the plant-soil system from eight different wetland areas across the South-East coast of China, where the invasive tallgrass Spartina alterniflora has replaced the native tall grasses Phragmites australis and the mangrove communities, originally dominated by the native species Kandelia obovata and Avicennia marina. Steel slag, a by-product of the steel industry, contains high amounts of active iron oxide and silica which can act as an oxidizing agent in agricultural soils. Biochar is a rich source of carbon, and the combined application of biochar and steel slag is assumed to have positive impacts on soil properties as well as plant growth, which are yet to be validated scientifically. Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Agricultural Resources and Environment) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals)
The need of more food production, an increase in acidic deposition and the large capacity of paddy to emit greenhouse gases all coincide in several areas of China. Studying the effects of acid rain on the emission of greenhouse gases and the productivity of rice paddies are thus important, because these effects are currently unknown. [...]
