The enhanced vegetation productivity driven by increased concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) [i. e. , the CO2 fertilization effect (CFE)] sustains an important negative feedback on climate warming, but the temporal dynamics of CFE remain unclear. [...]

Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Reyes-García, Victoria (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Ciais, Philippe (The Cyprus Institute. Climate and Atmosphere Research Center)
The dependence of hunter-gatherers on local net primary production (NPP) to provide food played a major role in shaping long-term human population dynamics. Observations of contemporary hunter-gatherers have shown an overall correlation between population density and annual NPP, but with a thousand-fold variation in population density per unit NPP that remains unexplained. When a peatland is drained and cultivated, it behaves as a notable source of CO2. However, we lack temporally and spatially explicit estimates of carbon losses from cultivated peatlands. Using a process-based land surface model that explicitly includes representation of peatland processes, we estimate that northern peatlands con-verted to croplands emitted 72 Pg C over 850-2010, with 45% of this source having occurred before 1750. Continuous atmospheric CO monitoring data indicate an increase in the amplitude of seasonal CO-cycle exchange (SCA) in northern high latitudes. The major drivers of enhanced SCA remain unclear and intensely debated, with land-use change, CO fertilization and warming being identified as likely contributors. [...]

Emission budgets are defined as the cumulative amount of anthropogenic CO₂ emission compatible with a global temperature-change target. The simplicity of the concept has made it attractive to policy-makers, yet it relies on a linear approximation of the global carbon-climate system's response to anthropogenic CO2 emissions. [...]

Large herbivores are a major agent in ecosystems, influencing vegetation structure, and carbon and nutrient flows. During the last glacial period, a mammoth steppe ecosystem prevailed in the unglaciated northern lands, supporting a high diversity and density of megafaunal herbivores. [...]
