With this article, we intend to discuss how some writers since 18th century treated the "decline" of the Roman Empire connected with their historical views. Therefore, we analyze the emergence of a new conception of time, the refutation of progress and decadence as useful historical concepts and the dissolution of the positivist paradigm trying to show how the theme of the passage from Antiquity to Medieval Age acquired a new meaning according to these deep and important theoretical changes.

Hipótesis interpretativa de los mecanismos que articulan el sentimiento patriótico a lo largo del siglo XVI a partir, principalment, de textos historiográficos. Definición de la terminología «patria» y «nación»; evolución de mitos y leyendas patrióticas en la historiografía; combate ideológico por el equilibrio político hispánico y europeo a partir de la utilización del nombre de España i del impacto de los Anales de Jerónimo Zurita.
This article provides an interpretative hypothesis for the mechanisms that underline the patriotic sentiment in the sixteenth century, based mainly on hitoriographic texts. The author also gives a definition of the terms native land and nation; the evolution of patirotic myths and legends in historiography and the idelogical struggle for political balance in Spain and Europe via the use of the term Spain and the impact of Jeronimo Zurita's Anales.
