Large herbivores are a major agent in ecosystems, influencing vegetation structure, and carbon and nutrient flows. During the last glacial period, a mammoth steppe ecosystem prevailed in the unglaciated northern lands, supporting a high diversity and density of megafaunal herbivores. [...]

Mangroves forests of Avicennia marina occupy about 135 km² in the Red Sea and represent one of the most important vegetated communities in this otherwise arid and oligotrophic region. We assessed the soil organic carbon (Corg) stocks, soil accretion rates (SAR; mm y⁻¹) and soil Corg sequestration rates (g Corg m⁻² yr⁻¹) in 10 mangrove sites within four locations along the Saudi coast of the Central Red Sea. Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) have continued to increase whereas atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen has declined in Europe and the USA during recent decades. Using time series of flux observations from 23 forests distributed throughout Europe and the USA, and generalised mixed models, we found that forest-level net ecosystem production and gross primary production have increased by 1% annually from 1995 to 2011. El artículo propone una mirada a herramientas y actividades didácticas en torno al Cambio Climático desde la enseñanza de las ciencias basada en la indagación (ECBI) y el trabajo a partir de concepciones erróneas. [...]
The article focuses on didactic tools and activities about Climatic Change from two perspectives: Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) and misconceptions. These resources have been collected at the Geological Information for Teachers (GIFT) meeting, held in the context of the annual European Geosciences Union conference (EGU 2014). [...]

The large peatland carbon stocks in the land use change-affected areas of equatorial Asia are vulnerable to fire. Combining satellite observations of active fire, burned area, and atmospheric concentrations of combustion tracers with a Bayesian inversion, we estimated the amount and variability of fire carbon emissions in equatorial Asia over the period 1997–2015. Here we present results from sediment traps that separate particles as a function of their settling velocity, which were moored in the Canary Current region over a 1. 5-year period. This study represents the longest time series using “in situ” particle settling velocity traps to date and are unique in providing year-round estimates. [...]
