Bicarbonate plays a fundamental role in the cell pH status in all organisms. In autotrophs, HCO₃⁻ may further contribute to carbon concentration mechanisms (CCM). This is especially relevant in the CO₂-poor habitats of cyanobacteria, aquatic microalgae, and macrophytes. [...]

19 p, 1.2 MB Contrasting trait syndromes in angiosperms and conifers are associated with different responses of tree growth to temperature on a large scale / Carnicer i Cols, Jofre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Barbeta i Margarit, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Sperlich, Dominik (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Coll, Marta (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals)
Recent large-scale studies of tree growth in the Iberian Peninsula reported contrasting positive and negative effects of temperature in Mediterranean angiosperms and conifers. Here we review the different hypotheses that may explain these trends and propose that the observed contrasting responses of tree growth to temperature in this region could be associated with a continuum of trait differences between angiosperms and conifers. 18 p, 721.7 KB Foliar photochemical processes and carbon metabolism under favourable and adverse winter conditions in a Mediterranean mixed forest, Catalonia (Spain) / Sperlich, Dominik (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Chang, C. T. (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Evergreen trees in the Mediterranean region must cope with a wide range of environmental stresses from summer drought to winter cold. The mildness of Mediterranean winters can periodically lead to favourable environmental conditions above the threshold for a positive carbon balance, benefitting evergreen woody species more than deciduous ones.
