Trends and ecological consequences of phosphorus (P) decline and increasing nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (N:P) ratios in rivers and estuaries are reviewed and discussed. Results suggest that re-oligotrophication is a dominant trend in rivers and estuaries of high-income countries in the last two-three decades, while in low-income countries widespread eutrophication occurs. Biocrusts, topsoil communities formed by mosses, lichens, liverworts, algae, and cyanobacteria, are a key biotic component of dryland ecosystems worldwide. Experiments carried out with lichen- and moss-dominated biocrusts indicate that climate change may dramatically reduce their cover and diversity. [...]

58 p, 975.8 KB Do all chlorophyll fluorescence emission wavelengths capture the spring recovery of photosynthesis in boreal evergreen foliage? / Zhang, Chao (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Atherton, Jon (University of Helsinki. Viikki Plant Science Centre) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Filella, Iolanda (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Kolari, Pasi (University of Helsinki. Department of Physics) ; Aalto, Juho (University of Helsinki. Department of Physics) ; Ruhanen, Hanna (Natural Resources Institute Finland) ; Bäck, Jaana (University of Helsinki. Department of Forest Sciences) ; Porcar-Castell, Albert (University of Helsinki. Viikki Plant Science Centre)
Chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) is closely related to photosynthesis and can be measured remotely using multiple spectral features as solar-induced fluorescence (SIF). In boreal regions, SIF shows particular promise as an indicator of photosynthesis, in part because of the limited variation of seasonal light absorption in these ecosystems. [...]

37 p, 448.3 KB Leaves of isoprene-emitting tobacco plants maintain PSII stability at high temperatures / Pollastri, Susanna (Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection (Florència, Itàlia)) ; Jorba, Ignasi (Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya) ; Hawkins, Timothy J. (Durham University. Department of Biosciences) ; Llusià Benet, Joan (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Michelozzi, Marco (Istituto di Bioscienze e Biorisorse (Florència, Itàlia)) ; Navajas, Daniel (Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Hussey, Patrick J. (Durham University. Department of Biosciences) ; Knight, Marc R. (Durham University. Department of Biosciences) ; Loreto, Francesco (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. Dipartimenti di Biologia)
At high temperatures, isoprene-emitting plants display a higher photosynthetic rate and a lower nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) compared with nonemitting plants. The mechanism of this phenomenon, which may be very important under current climate warming, is still elusive. [...]

Disruption of protein homeostasis in chloroplasts impairs the correct functioning of essential metabolic pathways, including the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway for the production of plastidial isoprenoids involved in photosynthesis and growth. [...]

Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia)
The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and red-edge region of the spectrum are known to be sensitive to plant physiological processes, and through measurement of these optical signals it is possible to use non-invasive remote sensing to monitor the plant photosynthetic status in response to environmental stresses such as drought.
