The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO) into value-added chemicals and fuels, preferably using renewable energy and earth-abundant materials, is considered a key priority for future energy research. In this work, a bias-free reactor device for the solar-driven conversion of CO to synthesis gas (syngas) has been developed. [...]

Husserl analyzes human history from three viewpoints and also deals with natural history. This article first considers the ground of human history, that is, a primal history that develops on the earth by means of a primal generativity in the domain of a familiar world. [...]

5 p, 851.5 KB Instrumental validation of Globigerinoides ruber Mg/Ca as a proxy for NE Pacific summer SST / Mortyn, Peter Graham (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Herguera, Juan Carlos (Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada. Departamento de Oceanografía) ; Martínez Botí, M. A. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Accurate reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) is a high research priority, given that it is such a crucial variable in the Earth's climate system. The Mg/Ca composition of Globigerinoides ruber (white) has been calibrated and applied for a number of tropical and extratropical paleo-SST reconstructions, though validation studies of the proxy against instrumental observations are relatively scarce. 10 p, 1.4 MB Social dynamics within decomposer communities lead to nitrogen retention and organic matter build-up in soils / Kaiser, Christina (Universität Wien. Institut für Mikrobiologie und Ökosystemwissenschaften) ; Franklin, Oskar (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) ; Richter, Andreas (Universität Wien. Institut für Mikrobiologie und Ecosystem Wissenschaft) ; Dieckmann, Ulf (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis)
The chemical structure of organic matter has been shown to be only marginally important for its decomposability by microorganisms. The question of why organic matter does accumulate in the face of powerful microbial degraders is thus key for understanding terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycling. [...]

Recent warming significantly advanced leaf onset in the northern hemisphere. This signal cannot be accurately reproduced by current models parameterized by daily mean temperature (Tmean). Here using in situ observations of leaf unfolding dates (LUDs) in Europe and the United States, we show that the interannual anomalies of LUD during 1982–2011 are triggered by daytime (Tmax) more than by nighttime temperature (Tmin). Human domination of the biosphere includes changes to disturbance regimes, which push many ecosystems towards early-successional states. Ecological theory predicts that early-successional ecosystems are more sensitive to perturbations than mature systems, but little evidence supports this relationship for the perturbation of climate change. 20 p, 190.0 KB D6.1. ConnectinGEO methodology / Masó Pau, Joan (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; CONNECTINGEO
Describing the ConnectinGEO methodology to be developed and tested during the project and to be promoted beyond the end of it.
The main aim of the ConnectinGEO methodology is to find gaps in EO networks and systems (mainly in-situ or non-space), determine remedies and recommendpriorities to solve these gaps. The gap analysis phase follows five different threads: Top-Down thread 1: Identification of a collection of observation requirements Top-Down thread 2: Research programs aims and targets Bottom-up thread 1: Consultation process Bottom-up thread 2: GEOSS Discovery and Access Broker analysis Bottom-up thread 3: industry-driven challenges. [...]
Then, a period for reviewing the gaps and identifying remedies will start. The quantifications of the impact, the feasibility and the costs will permit the application of a semi automatic priority calculation. [...]
