25 p, 1.5 MB Adaptive resilience of and through urban ecosystem services : a transdisciplinary approach to sustainability in Barcelona / De Luca, Claudia (Università di Bologna. Dipartimento di Architettura) ; Langemeyer, Johannes (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Vano, Simeon (Czech Academy of Sciences. Global Change Research Institute) ; Baró Porras, Francesc (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Andersson, Erik (Stockholm University. Stockholm Resilience Centre)
Ecosystem services (ES) from urban green and blue infrastructure (GBI) provide cities and their citizens with benefits necessary to cope with present and future sustainability challenges. Long-term comprehensive urban greening strategies, policies, and plans are thus central to the development of sustainable, liveable, and resilient cities. [...]

Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Villalba, Gara (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Escola d'Enginyeria)
The Covid-19 pandemic newly brings food resilience in cities to our attention and the need to question the desired degree of food self-sufficiency through urban agriculture. While these questions are by no means new and periodically entering the global research focus and policy discussions during periods of crises - the last time during the global financial crisis and resulting food price increases in 2008 - urban and peri-urban agriculture continue to be replaced by land-uses rendering higher market values (e. [...]

21 p, 563.1 KB The role of land-use history in driving successional pathways and its implications for the restoration of tropical forests / Jakovac, Catarina C. (Wageningen University & Research) ; Junqueira, André B. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Crouzeilles, Renato (Universidade Veiga de Almeida) ; Peña-Claros, Marielos (Wageningen University & Research) ; Mesquita, Rita C. G. (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia) ; Bongers, Frans (Wageningen University & Research)
Secondary forests are increasingly important components of human-modified landscapes in the tropics. Successional pathways, however, can vary enormously across and within landscapes, with divergent regrowth rates, vegetation structure and species composition. [...]

The increase in aridity, mainly by decreases in precipitation but also by higher temperatures, is likely the main threat to the diversity and survival of Mediterranean forests. Changes in land use, including the abandonment of extensive crop activities, mainly in mountains and remote areas, and the increases in human settlements and demand for more resources with the resulting fragmentation of the landscape, hinder the establishment of appropriate management tools to protect Mediterranean forests and their provision of services and biodiversity.
