In this work a novel strategy is introduced to achieve thermally switchable emission from photon upconversion (UC) systems based on organic dyes. When these molecules were dissolved at low concentrations in phase-change media, a reversible, sharp, and nearly complete interconversion from blue upconverted emission to red luminescence was observed around the solid-to-liquid transition of the system. Significant levels of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria are nowadays a worldwide matter, carrying considerable public health care challenges and huge economic concerns. Because of the rapid transmission of these biothreat agents and the outbreak of diseases, a rapid detection of pathogens in early stages is crucial, particularly in low-resources settings. [...]

The scholar model of energy and its energy-related concepts (energy as a function of state, transfer, conservation and degradation) represent a challenge for teachers and students, since it implies changing the way to see the physical phenomena, from the mechanics to the energetic view. [...]

Here, we describe selected work on the development and study of nanofluids based on graphene and reduced graphene oxide both in aqueous and organic electrolytes. A thorough study of thermal properties of graphene in amide organic solvents (N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) showed a substantial increase of thermal conductivity and specific heat upon graphene integration in those solvents. The 'Solar salt' (60% NaNO-40% KNO, wt. %) is the most used heat transfer and storage material in high temperature CSP systems. The main drawback is its high melting temperature of 228 °C, which requires extra-energy to keep it in the liquid state and avoid damage to pipes at low temperatures. [...]

Cyclobutane thymine dimers, the major photoproducts produced in UV-irradiated DNA, are the main causative agents for mutagenesis and skin cancer. This lesion can also be initiated under UVA radiation, involving triplet-triplet energy transfer mechanism from a photosensitizer to the thymine nucleobase. [...]

Laboratori de Medicina Computacional) ; Pou, Chantevy (University of Glasgow) ; Varela Liste, María José (University of Glasgow) ; Milligan, Graeme (University of Glasgow)
Background: The dopamine D receptor can form dimers/oligomers, but the molecular basis for this is poorly defined. Results: Molecular modeling, mutagenesis, and analysis of inactive state receptor crystal structures allowed assessment of models of receptor organization. [...]
