The iris is one of the most secure biometric information that is widely employed in authentication systems. In this paper we present a method for iris recognition based on the Contourlet Transform and Entropy which entails i) the detection and segmentation of the iris, ii) its normalization, iii) the application of the Contourlet Transform, iv) the generation of the iris descriptor, and v) the matching between the query iris and those in the database. School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) ; Suandi, Shahrel Azmin (Universiti Sains Malaysia. School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering)
In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective technique for an automatic iris and eyelids detection method for facial sketch images. Our system uses Circular Hough Transformation (CHT) algorithm for iris localization process and a low level grayscale analysis for eyelids contour segmentation procedure. [...]

(Indian Institute of Science. Department of Aerospace Engineering (Bangalore, India))
Visual autonomous systems capable of monitoring crowded areas and alerting the authorities in occurrence of a suspicious action can play a vital role in controlling crime rate. Previous atte mpts have been made to monitor crime using posture recognition but nothing exclusive to investigating actions of people in large populated area has been cited. [...]

Department of Informatics) ; Vassilas, Nikolaos (Technological Educational Institute of Athens. Department of Informatics) ; Ghazanfarpour, Djamchid (Université de Limoges (France). Département Mathématiques Informatique)
In this work we present a novel kernel-based Hough Transform method for robust line detection in poor quality images of 2D lattices of rectangular objects. Following a preprocessing stage that specifies the connected regions of the image, the proposed method uses a kernel to specify each region's voting strength based on the following shape descriptors: a) its rectangularity, b) the orientation of the major side of its minimum area bounding rectangle (MBR), and c) the MBR's geometrical center. In this paper, we propose a partial differential equation based method to segment image objects, which have a given parametric shape based on energy functional. The energy functional is composed of a term that detects object boundaries and a term that constrains the contour to find a shape compatible with the parametric shape. [...]

This paper presents a tracking algorithm for automatic instrument localization in robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery. We present a simple and robust system that doesn't need the presence of artificial marks, or special colours to distinguish the instruments. [...]
