Purpose: The relationship between the Industrial Districts (DIs) and immigration has been studied up to now through cases of ethnic economies developed within the IDs by immigrant entrepreneurs. In this study we argue that there is a more general and complex interaction between the two phenomena that can lead to the development of ethnic economy, or to the emergence of migratory enclaves (concentration of emigrated people of the same nationality) depending on the degree of formality of the DI and the local conditions of immigrant groups.
