Global Trends in Education Inequality : 1950-2010 / Permanyer, Iñaki (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Boertien, Diederik (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics)
We document trends in global education inequality and its between and within-country components using absolute, intermediate and relative inequality measures. Existing studies have relied on converting categorical variables into continuous ones to estimate levels of inequality. [...]

There is increasing evidence of unequal access to resources within the household between children and adults. The literature suggests that patterns of intra-household inequality are context specific: while some find that households prioritise children (Main and Bradshaw 2016), others find that children are more likely to experience the consequences of poverty (Brown et al. The objective of this study is to gain more comprehensive knowledge about social inequality in mortality in pre-industrial periods. With this aim, we have reconstructed the life courses of the inhabitants of the town of Vera in south-east Spain for the period 1797-1812 in order to estimate the influence of socio-economic status on ordinary and extraordinary mortality, given that, during this period, the town suffered from several epidemic outbreaks of yellow fever. This article describes trends in parental wealth homogamy among union cohorts formed between 1987 and 2013 in Denmark. Using high-quality register data on the wealth of parents during the year of partnering, we show that the correlation between partners' levels of parental wealth is considerably lower compared with estimates from research on other countries. We consider entire transcendental maps with bounded set of singular values such that periodic rays exist and land. For such maps, we prove a refined version of the Fatou-Shishikura inequality which takes into account rationally invisible periodic orbits, that is, repelling cycles which are not landing points of any periodic ray. Using data from the UN World Population Prospects, we document global trends in lifespan inequality from 1950 until 2015. Our findings indicate that (i) there has been a sustained decline in overall lifespan inequality, (ii) adult lifespan variability has also declined, but some plateaus and trend reversals have been identified, (iii) lifespan inequality among the elderly has increased virtually everywhere, (iv) most of the world variability in age-at-death can be attributed within-country variability. In a search for determinants of societal levels of income inequality, scholars have suggested that homogamy within marriages and cohabiting relationships is a potentially important driver of inequality. [...]
In a second stage of the analysis we examine why changes in educational assortative mating mattered relatively little for changes in income inequality. A major hypothesis proposed in earlier research is that changes in educational homogamy have not been large enough to affect income inequality. [...]

In measuring the variability of a bounded variable such as health status, the use of traditional income inequality measures poses several problems. On the one hand, the bounded nature of the variable generates a strong relationship between its mean and the corresponding inequality levels (i. [...]

Grup de Recerca Educació i Treball) ; Perosa, Graziela (Universidade de São Paulo)
Finland, Spain and Brazil are three very internally complex and heterogeneous realities, with contradictions and permanent reforms to their education systems. In a first quantitative approach each country can be placed in a continuum of the education system that goes from most successful in terms of reaching a high level of education all across the population, in conditions of equity and facilitating youths' incorporation into the labour market, to least successful, with Finland and Brazil occupying either end of the spectrum respectively and Spain occupying an intermediate situation. This chapter contains a comparative analysis of the changes in the inequality of family income distribution in the last two decades in Latin America and Europe. The study examines the degree to which the economic-productive factors-associated with the primary income distribution-or, on the contrary, the social policies-linked to the secondary distribution-reveal structural differences in economic inequality between regions in the 2000-2017 period. School of Mathematics) ; Matúš, František (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) ; Ruskai, Mary Beth (Tufts University) ; Winter, Andreas (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
We investigate the universal linear inequalities that hold for the von Neumann entropies in a multi-party system, prepared in a stabiliser state. We demonstrate here that entropy vectors for stabiliser states satisfy, in addition to the classic inequalities, a type of linear rank inequalities associated with the combinatorial structure of normal subgroups of certain matrix groups.
