Using data from the UN World Population Prospects, we document global trends in lifespan inequality from 1950 until 2015. Our findings indicate that (i) there has been a sustained decline in overall lifespan inequality, (ii) adult lifespan variability has also declined, but some plateaus and trend reversals have been identified, (iii) lifespan inequality among the elderly has increased virtually everywhere, (iv) most of the world variability in age-at-death can be attributed within-country variability. In a search for determinants of societal levels of income inequality, scholars have suggested that homogamy within marriages and cohabiting relationships is a potentially important driver of inequality. [...]
In a second stage of the analysis we examine why changes in educational assortative mating mattered relatively little for changes in income inequality. A major hypothesis proposed in earlier research is that changes in educational homogamy have not been large enough to affect income inequality. [...]

School of Mathematics) ; Matúš, František (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) ; Ruskai, Mary Beth (Tufts University) ; Winter, Andreas (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
We investigate the universal linear inequalities that hold for the von Neumann entropies in a multi-party system, prepared in a stabiliser state. We demonstrate here that entropy vectors for stabiliser states satisfy, in addition to the classic inequalities, a type of linear rank inequalities associated with the combinatorial structure of normal subgroups of certain matrix groups. 29 p, 406.8 KB Homeownership and social inequality in Spain / Cabré, Anna, 1943- ; Módenes Cabrerizo, Juan Antonio
High homeownership rates in Spain are not the result of tradition; they are the product of the rapid social and economic changes that took place during the second half of the twentieth century. Like young people putting off leaving their parents' home, choosing to study for yet another degree, opting to set up a permanent household, or deciding to límit the size of their family, homeownership in Spain is just one of the strategies individuals and families adopt to achieve or maintain the social and economic status of average Europeans. Using the Spanish Labour Force Survey from 1999 to 2006, this article compares the distribution of foreign and national workers within the Spanish labour market. The initial hypothesis states that in the context of a segmented labour market, the recently arrived foreign population has filled the more precarious labour positions of the "secondary labour segment", allowing younger Spanish generations to occupy more skilled and stable occupations in accordance with educational attainment. 30 p, 451.6 KB Selection and educational attainment : Why some children are left behind? Evidence from a middle-income country. / Méndez-Errico, Luciana ; Ramos Morilla, Xavier ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia Aplicada
We model schooling as a sequential process and examine why some children are left behind. We focus on the factors that explain selection at early stages of the education system. Our findings for Uruguay suggest that long-term factors, such as parental background or ethnicity matter across all education stages while the effect of short-term factors, such as family income, wear out as individuals progress in the education system, suggesting a severe selection process at early stages.
