We demonstrate a versatile capability to measure directly the magnetostrictive properties through the magnetization process on a nanometric scale using a modified scanning tunneling microscope. Single 10 mm long, 125 μm diam amorphouswires of both positive and negative magnetostriction have been studied and the data are compared with the hysteretic loops determined by both ac and SQUID magnetic measurements. The asymmetric magnetization reversal in exchange biased Fe/MnF2 involves coherent (Stoner-Wohlfarth) magnetization rotation into an intermediate, stable state perpendicular to the applied field. We provide here the experimentally tested analytical conditions for the unambiguous observation of both longitudinal and transverse magnetization components using the magneto-optical Kerr effect. The magnetization reversal in Permalloy (Py) and Py-IrMn disks (1μm diameter) is investigated. The Py disks reverse their magnetization via vortex state formation. Conversely, if the Py-IrMn disks are field cooled from above the blocking temperatureTB, a critical angle with respect to the cooling direction is set, beyond which the vortex no longer nucleates.
