The present paper offers some thoughts as to the dynamics by which, in the perception of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, some specific bodies, especially the unattractive remnants of old men worshipped as saints on account of their ascetic virtues, came to be described as mirabilia, that is as wonderfully beautiful relics, meant to be looked at and contemplated in the same way as holy portraits.
