Eocene/Oligocene global disruption and the revolution of Caribbean mangroves / Rull, Valentí (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
In a recent paper, the author demonstrated that, in contrast with the prevailing view of eventual gradual regional differentiation from a hypothetical Cretaceous pantropical mangrove belt around the Tethys Sea, the Caribbean mangroves originated de novo in the Eocene after the evolutionary appearance of the first mangrove-forming tree species known for the region, the ancestor of the extant Pelliciera. 27 p, 3.4 MB Detrital zircon similarities and dissimilarities between the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Ossa-Morena Zone and Meguma / Lains Amaral, João (Universidade de Lisboa. Departamento de Geologia) ; Solá, Ana Rita (Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia) ; Bento dos Santos, Telmo M. (Universidade de Lisboa. Instituto Dom Luiz) ; Chichorro, Martim (Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Departamento de Ciências da Terra)
Despite the so-called exotic nature of the South Portuguese Zone relatively to the other major domains of the Iberian Massif of peri-Gondwanan affinity, Devonian detrital rocks of the oldest strata in the Iberian Pyrite Belt have a remarkable resemblance with the Ossa-Morena Zone's Neoproterozoic-Cambrian rocks and the West Meguma's Cambrian-Ordovician rocks, presenting the so-called "West African signature". Instituto de Geociencias)
Detrital zircon grains from Cambrian-Lower Ordovician sandstones and quartzites sampled in the Pyrenees were dated by LA-ICPMS in order to assess their provenance sources. Resulting age distributions are compared to other available datasets from neighbouring margins, such as Morocco, the Iberian Peninsula, southern France and Sardinia. [...]

10 p, 433.2 KB A new endemic genus of eomyid rodents from the early Miocene of Japan / Kimura, Yuri (National Museum of Nature and Science) ; Tomida, Yukimitsu (National Museum of Nature and Science) ; Kalthoff, Daniela C. (Swedish Museum of Natural History) ; Casanovas i Vilar, Isaac (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Mörs, Thomas (Swedish Museum of Natural History) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Fossil rodents are generally scarce in the Miocene of Japan. However, as much as three taxa of eomyid rodents had been reported from the early Miocene Nakamura Formation (ca. 18. 5 Ma) in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. [...]

22 p, 2.1 MB The Early Paleozoic history of the Cuyania (greater Precordillera) terrane of western Argentina : evidence from geochronology of detrital zircons from Middle Cambrian sandstones / Finney, S. (California State University at Long Beach. Department of Geological Sciences) ; Peralta, S. (CONICET. Universidad Nacional de San Juan) ; Gehrels, G. (University of Arizona. Department of Geosciences) ; Marsaglia, K. (California State University at Northridge. Department of Geological Sciences)
U-Pb geochronology of large detrital zircons populations is a powerful tool for interpreting sandstone provenance. Here, it is applied to three Middle Cambrian sandstones from the Precordillera of Argentina with the purpose of using the provenance interpretations to test paleogeographic and paleotectonic models proposed for the Cuyania or Precordillera terrane. 16 p, 1.2 MB Controlling factors on clay mineral assemblages : insights from facies analysis of Pliocene to Pleistocene coastal margin deposits, Western Portugal / University of Coimbra. Department of Earth Sciences, Geosciences Centre
The clay fractions in the Pliocene to Pleistocene coastal margin record are usually dominated by kaolinite and illite, with lesser amounts of vermiculite, 10-14 mixed layer clays and smectite. The high clay mineral crystallinity, the mineralogical relations to facies and depositional setting and some horizontal variations along coeval deposits suggest that clay assemblages are mainly detrital.
