This paper focuses on the character of Helga Crane in Nella Larsen's novel Quicksand (1928), and aims to describe the complexity of her reality as a mixed-race female. Its purpose is to analyze the protagonist's attitudes towards her family background, lack of community, and mainly, race and identity, and conclude to what extent Helga Crane goes beyond the traditional African American literary figure of the "Tragic Mulatta".
Aquest treball se centra en el personatge de la Helga Crane a la novel·la Quicksand (1928) de Nella Larsen, i pretén descriure la complexitat de la seva realitat com a dona de raça mixta. El propòsit es analitzar les actituts de la protagonista en relació al seu entorn familiar, la manca de comunitat, i principalment, la raça i la identitat, i concloure fins a quin punt es pot considerar que Helga Crane va més enllà de la tradicional figura literària afroamericana de la "Mulata Tràgica".
