In view of the current increase and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), there is an urgent need to find new strategies to combat it. This study had two aims. First, we synthesized highly monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of approximately 17 nm, and we functionalized them with mercaptopoly(ethylene glycol) carboxylic acid (mPEG-COOH) and amikacin (AK). Since heavy metals and micro−/nanoplastics (MNPLs) can share common environmental niches, their potential interactions could modulate their hazard impacts. The current study was planned to evaluate the potential interactions between silver compounds (silver nanoparticles or silver nitrate) and two different sizes of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPLs) (PS-50 and PS-500 nm), administered via ingestion to Drosophila larvae. [...]

This study presents the use of the modified coffee husk and coffee lignin as sorbents in the heavy metal ions sorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Cr(III), and Cu(II) in an aqueous solution. The modification of sorbents was carried out by the impregnation method, using silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a nanoparticles' (NPs) precursor, and reducing agent, respectively. 26 p, 2.3 MB Modulation of population density and size of silver nanoparticles embedded in bacterial cellulose : via ammonia exposure: visual detection of volatile compounds in a piece of plasmonic nanopaper / Heli, B. (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Morales-Narváez, Eden (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Golmohammadi, Hamed (ACECR-Production Technology Institute) ; Ajji, A. (Polytechnique Montréal. Département de Génie Chimique) ; Merkoçi, Arben (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats)
The localized surface plasmon resonance exhibited by noble metal nanoparticles can be sensitively tuned by varying their size and interparticle distances. We report that corrosive vapour (ammonia) exposure dramatically reduces the population density of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded within bacterial cellulose, leading to a larger distance between the remaining nanoparticles and a decrease in the UV-Vis absorbance associated with the AgNP plasmonic properties. Food contact surfaces are primary sources of bacterial contamination in food industry processes. With the objective of preventing bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on surfaces, this study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of silver (Ag-NPs) and zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs) nanoparticle-containing polyester surfaces (concentration range from 400 ppm to 850 ppm) using two kinds of bacteria, Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli), and the prevention of bacterial biofilm formation using the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. 18 p, 1016.4 KB Enhancing Localized Pesticide Action through Plant Foliage by Silver-Cellulose Hybrid Patches / Alonso-Díaz, Alejandro (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Floriach Clark, Jordi (Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona) ; Fuentes Lazaro, Judit (Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona) ; Capellades, Montserrat (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Sánchez Coll, Núria (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Laromaine, Anna (Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona)
Efficacy and efficiency of pesticide application in the field through the foliage still face many challenges. There exists a mismatch between the hydrophobic character of the leaf and the active molecule, low dispersion of the pesticides on the leaves' surface, runoff loss, and rolling down of the active molecules to the field, decreasing their efficacy and increasing their accumulation to the soil. [...]

11 p, 738.1 KB A recombinant Potato virus Y infectious clone tagged with the Rosea1 Visual Marker (PVY-Ros1) facilitates the analysis of viral infectivity and allows the production of large amounts of anthocyanins in plants / Cordero, Teresa (Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas) ; Mohamed, Mohamed A. (Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas) ; Lopez-Moya, Juan Jose (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Daròs, José-Antonio (Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas)
Potato virus Y (PVY) is a major threat to the cultivation of potato and other solanaceous plants. By inserting a cDNA coding for the Antirrhinum majus Rosea1 transcription factor into a PVY infectious clone, we created a biotechnological tool (PVY-Ros1) that allows infection by this relevant plant virus to be tracked by the naked eye with no need for complex instrumentation.
