Foreign languages with translation purposes: In search of its self-identityLanguage learning for future translators and interpreters is a cornerstone in the acquisition of the translation competence since the language is the engine of the whole translation activity. [...]

23 p, 1.8 MB Species-specific modulation of food-search behavior by respiration and chemosensation in Drosophila larvae / Kim, Daeyeon (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) ; Álvarez, Mar (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Lechuga, Laura M. (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Louis, Matthieu (University of California)
Animals explore their environment to encounter suitable food resources. Despite its vital importance, this behavior puts individuals at risk by consuming limited internal energy during locomotion. We have developed a novel assay to investigate how food-search behavior is organized in Drosophila melanogaster larvae dwelling in hydrogels mimicking their natural habitat. [...]

17 p, 1.6 MB Complex stability and dynamic subunit interchange modulates the disparate activities of the yeast moonlighting proteins Hal3 and Vhs3 / Abrie, J. Albert (Stellenbosch University. Department of Biochemistry) ; Molero Merinero, Cristina (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Bioquímica i Biologia Molecular) ; Ariño Carmona, Joaquín (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Bioquímica i Biologia Molecular) ; Strauss, Erick (Stellenbosch University. Department of Biochemistry) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina "Vicent Villar Palasí"
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hal3 and Vhs3 are moonlighting proteins, acting both as inhibitors of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase Ppz1 and as subunits (together with Cab3) of the unique heterotrimeric phosphopantothenoylcysteine decarboxylase (PPCDC) enzyme of Hemiascomycetous yeast. [...]

34 p, 520.2 KB A contingency table approach based on nearest neighbour relations for testing self and mixed correspondence / Ceyhan, Elvan (North Carolina State University. Department of Statistics)
Nearest neighbour methods are employed for drawing inferences about spatial patterns of points from two or more classes. We introduce a new pattern called correspondence which is motivated by (spatial) niche/habitat specificity and segregation, and define an associated contingency table called a correspondence contingency table, and examine the relation of correspondence with the motivating patterns (namely, segregation and niche specificity). The metal binding preference of metallothioneins (MTs) groups them in two extreme subsets, the Zn/Cd- and the Cu-thioneins. Ciliates harbor the largest MT gene/protein family reported so far, including 5 paralogs that exhibit relatively low sequence similarity, excepting MTT2 and MTT4. [...]

The ability of chloroperoxidase (CPO) to catalyze amino alcohol oxidations was investigated. The oxidations of compounds with different configurations with respect to the amine position towards hydroxyl – using H₂O₂ and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) – were analyzed in terms of the initial reaction rate, substrate conversion, and CPO operational stability.
The cultural specificity of a literary work is, to a large extent, consequential of the cultural markers therein, as these hew the plot and add colour, thereby contributing to the work's specific cultural identity: a society in a historical moment and in a specific geographical location, social customs and practices, and a very specific cultural heritage. 40 p, 168.0 KB Specificity and Differential Object Marking in Spanish / Leonetti, Manuel (Universidad de Alcalá. Departamento de Filología)
The use of the preposition a with direct objects in Spanish is a well known instance of the general phenomenon of Differential Object Marking (DOM). In Spanish grammars the insertion of a is usually presented as dependent on two basic factors: animacy and referentiality/specificity. [...]

18 p, 115.3 KB En Preceding Direct Objects in Galician : An Indefiniteness Marker? / Martí i Girbau, Núria
In Galician direct objects of eventive verbs can be introduced by the preposition en. Presence of en signals semantic differences related to aspect and specificity: definite objects preceded by en pattern like bare NPs -and not like the corresponding definite objects without en- in that they required an atelic sentential aspect and are non-specific. [...]
