We experimentally investigate the charge induction mechanism across gated, narrow, ballistic graphene devices with different degrees of edge disorder. By using magnetoconductance measurements as the probing technique, we demonstrate that devices with large edge disorder exhibit a nearly homogeneous capacitance profile across the device channel, close to the case of an infinitely large graphene sheet. 5 p, 2.1 MB Hypersonic phonon propagation in one-dimensional surface phononic crystal / Graczykowski, Bartlomiej (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Sledzinska, Marianna (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Kehagias, Nikolaos (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Alzina, Francesc (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Reparaz, Juan Sebastian (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Sotomayor Torres, Clivia M. (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia)
Hypersonic, thermally activated surface acoustic waves propagating in the surface of crystalline silicon patterned with periodic stripes were studied by Brillouin light scattering. Two characteristic directions (normal and parallel to the stripes) of surface acoustic waves propagation were examined exhibiting a distinctive propagation behavior. [...]

5 p, 477.5 KB Synthesis and structural characterization of nanocrystalline batio3 at various calcination temperatures / Fuentes, Sandra (Centro para el Desarrollo de la Nanociencia y la Nanotecnología (Chile)) ; Céspedes Mulero, Francisco (Universidad Católica Del Norte) ; Muñoz, Pamela (Universidad Católica Del Norte) ; Chávez Ángel, Emigdio (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Padilla Campos, Luis (Universidad de Antofagasta. Departamento de Química)
Barium titanate (BaTiO3) powders with particle sizes about 50 nm in diameter were synthesized using a hydrothermal route. The powders were characterized using various experimental techniques such as XRD, TEM and Raman spectroscopy, and they showed a good crystallinity and homogeneity without heat treatments. [...]

15 p, 650.6 KB Formation versus Hydrolysis of the Peptide Bond from a Quantum-mechanical Viewpoint : the Role of Mineral Surfaces and Implications for the Origin of Life / Rimola, Albert (Università di Torino. Dipartimento di Chimica IFM) ; Ugliengo, Piero (Università di Torino. Dipartimento di Chimica IFM) ; Sodupe Roure, Mariona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Química)
The condensation (polymerization by water elimination) of molecular Building blocks to yield the first active biopolymers (e. g. of amino acids to form peptides) during primitive Earth is an intriguing question that nowadays still remains open since these processes are thermodynamically disfavoured in highly dilute water solutions. [...]
