15 p, 3.9 MB Identification of a large anguimorph lizard (Reptilia, Squamata) by an articulated hindlimb from the upper Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) of Basturs-1 (Lleida, Spain) / Cabezuelo Hernández, Alberto (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Espanya). Grupo de Biología Evolutiva) ; Bolet, Arnau (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Torices, Angélica (Universidad de La Rioja. Departamento de Ciencias Humanas) ; Pérez-García, Adán (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Espanya). Grupo de Biología Evolutiva)
Appendicular remains of squamate reptiles are barely described in the fossil record due to their low preservational potential and generally poor diagnostic information. Not many squamate fossil individuals preserve appendicular bony elements, these being mainly restricted to the rare articulated specimens found in a limited number of localities with specific conditions that favor exceptional preservation. A case study in the Orígens Geopark, Spain / Blasi Arana, Isabel Camila (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Pellicer, Xavier M. (Orígens UNESCO Global Geopark) ; Poch Serra, Joan (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; Galobart, Àngel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Visits to paleontological sites are one of the most popular geotourism activities, but their appeal may have drawbacks. Deciding which sites are suitable for dissemination and appropriate measures for their optimal conservation can be complex. [...]

19 p, 1.9 MB Mexican Upper Cretaceous rudists (Hippuritida, Bivalvia) : Taxonomic, stratigraphic, and geologic data / Pons, Jose Maria (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia) ; García Barrera, Pedro (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Museo de Paleontología) ; Oviedo, Angélica (Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (Mèxic). Facultad de Ingeniería) ; Vicens, Enric (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geologia)
Analysis of seventy published papers dealing with Mexican Upper Cretaceous rudists, together with consultation of the newest geological maps covering the areas with mentioned rudist fossil localities, evidenced that: a) several among the Turonian-Maastrichtian species mentioned are junior synonymies, nomen nudum, insufficiently described, or have untraceable types. (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Departamento de Geologia e Paleontologia)
A recent publication of fossil bones of titanosaurs assigned to Aeolosaurini from the Morro do Cambambe site (Mato Grosso state, Brazil, Upper Cretaceous) reported anomalous growth in some of them. Here, we present osteohistological sections of elements to understand not only the microstructure and growth of such bones, but also the nature of those anomalies. [...]

14 p, 617.6 KB First record of a Notosuchian crocodyliform from Italy / Dalla Vecchia, Fabio (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Cau, Andrea (Museo Geologico Giovanni Capellini)
A serrated tooth from the Coniacian-Santonian (Upper Cretaceous) Polazzo fossil site (Karst, NE Italy) is the first record of a notosuchian crocodyliform from Italy. Although it shares synapomorphies with teeth referred to the European genus Doratodon and with the Gondwanan genus Araripesuchus, it is distinct in the unusual combination of features, suggesting the presence of a yet unreported notosuchian taxon in the Adriatic-Dinaric Carbonate Platform located in the Tethys between the Afroarabian continent and the North European landmass during Late Cretaceous times. Upper Cretaceous mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequences are among the most important targets for hydrocarbon exploration in the Moghan area, located in the eastern Para-Tethys Basin. Despite of their significance, little is known about their facies characteristics and depositional environments. [...]

The Lower Maastrichtian of Fumanya and neighbouring localities of the Vallcebre syncline (Eastern Pyrenees, Catalonia) provide the first taphonomic evidence for the hypothesis that cheirolepidiacean conifers were significant precursors of Maastrichtian Pyrenean coal. [...]
