35 p, 524.4 KB Examining the Potential of Marine Renewable Energy : A Net Energy Perspective / Samsó, Roger (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Crespin, Júlia (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Dinàmica de la Terra i de l'Oceà) ; García-Olivares, Antonio (Institut de Ciències del Mar) ; Solé, Jordi (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Dinàmica de la Terra i de l'Oceà)
It is often claimed that marine renewable energy alone could meet the electricity demand of current and future human societies. However, such claims are based on highly uncertain estimations of the global potentials of marine renewable energy sources (including tidal, ocean currents, wave, offshore wind and salinity and thermal gradients), and do not take into account the embedded energy of current technologies. 15 p, 10.8 MB Impact of Battery Energy System Integration in Frequency Control of an Electrical Grid with Wind Power / Pokhriyal, Anukriti (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Domínguez-García, José Luis (Institut de Recerca Energètica de Catalunya. Jardins de les Dones de Negre) ; Gómez-Romero, Pedro 1959- (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia)
The rapid increase in the integration of renewable energy sources into the electrical grid is posing new challenges for the dynamic responses due to the global inertia reduction. In this regard, the impact on frequency stability of such reduction and the potential support from wind power have been investigated lately. [...]

24 p, 2.2 MB Contesting energy transitions : wind power and conflicts in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec / Avila, Sofía (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
This article studies the expansion of large-scale wind energy projects on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (Mexico) and local socio-environmental conflicts that have emerged in response. It explores how the neoliberal agenda in Mexico is shaping a specific way of implementing wind energy projects, and how this is leading to local resistance and the production of alternatives. [...]

41 p, 3.2 MB Environmental justice and the expanding geography of wind power conflicts / Avila, Sofía (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Wind power is expanding globally. Simultaneously, a growing number of conflicts against large-scale wind farms are emerging in multiple locations around the world. As these processes occur, new questions arise on how electricity from wind is being generated, how such energy is flowing within societies, and how these production-flows are being shaped by specific power structures. 26 p, 640.6 KB Wind farm siting and protected areas in Catalonia : planning alternatives or reproducing "One-dimensional thinking" ? / Ariza-Montobbio, Pere (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Farrell, Katharine N. 1969- (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Department für Agrarökonomie)
Wind energy is an emblem of sustainability with the potential to promote a qualitative alternative to current energy systems and nuclear options for CO2 reduction. However, wind farm siting often conflicts with aspirations to conserve traditional landscapes and wildlife habitats. [...]

16 p, 2.7 MB La ecología política de conflictos sobre energía eólica. Un estudio de caso en Cataluña / Zografos, Christos (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Saladié Gil, Sergi (Universitat Rovira i Virgili.

The study explores reasons behind conflicts regarding the installation of wind farms in Terra Alta, a rural county in Catalonia. Our study identifies three main causes of conflict. First, and in accordance to the coceptual framework of political ecology, the conflict forms part of a more generalised conflict regarding the «macro-concentration» of energy-generating plants in the south of Catalonia, which produce economic benefits for Catalonia's centre (e.
