14 p, 1015.4 KB Discovering lethal alleles across the turkey genome using a transmission ratio distortion approach / Abdalla, E. A. (University of Guelph) ; Id-Lahoucine, S. (University of Guelph) ; Cánovas, A. (University of Guelph) ; Casellas Vidal, Joaquim (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Ciència Animal i dels Aliments) ; Schenkel, F. S. Deviation from Mendelian inheritance expectations (transmission ratio distortion, TRD) has been observed in several species, including the mouse and humans. In this study, TRD was characterized in the turkey genome using both allelic (specific- and unspecific-parent TRD) and genotypic (additive- and dominance-TRD) parameterizations within a Bayesian framework. Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs that are essential in the transcriptional silencing of transposable elements and warrant genome stability in the mammalian germline. In this study, we have identified piRNAs in porcine sperm using male germline and zygote datasets from human, mice, cow and pig, and evaluated the relation between their abundances and sperm quality traits. [...]

Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions is relevant for reducing the environmental impact of ruminant production. In this study, the rumen microbiome from Holstein cows was characterized through a combination of 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. [...]

Departament de Ciència Animal i dels Aliments)
We aimed to determine whether casein variants that are currently segregating in ovine populations existed before the domestication of sheep or, to the contrary, if their emergence is much more recent. [...]

27 p, 835.3 KB Detection of homozygous genotypes for a putatively lethal recessive mutation in the porcine argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) gene / Mármol-Sánchez, Emilio (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Luigi Sierra, Maria Gracia (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Quintanilla, Raquel (Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries) ; Amills i Eras, Marcel (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica)
The sequencing of the pig genome revealed the existence of homozygous individuals for a nonsense mutation in the argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) gene (rs81212146, c. 944T>A, L315X). Paradoxically, an AA homozygous genotype for this polymorphism is expected to abolish the function of the ASS1 enzyme that participates in the urea cycle, leading to citrullinemia, hyperammonemia, coma and death. The population of Spanish sheep has decreased from 24 to 15 million heads in the last 75 years due to multiple social and economic factors. Such a demographic reduction might have caused an increase in homozygosity and inbreeding, thus limiting the viability of local breeds with excellent adaptations to harsh ecosystems. [...]
