Departament de Física) ; Ronco Bonvehi, Elio (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Calsamiglia Costa, John (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Muñoz Tapia, Ramón (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Bagán Capella, Emili (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
We address the problem of estimating pure qubit states with nonideal (noisy) measurements in the multiple-copy scenario, where the data consist of a number N of identically prepared qubits. We show that the average fidelity of the estimates can increase significantly if the estimation protocol allows for inconclusive answers, or abstentions. [...]

Cloaking a three-dimensional object in free space from electromagnetic waves has recently become a theoretical possibility, although practical implementations can only be made in reduced schemes. If static fields are involved, requirements are less restrictive and some practical realizations have been possible. [...]

Department of Physics) ; Narasimhachar, Varun (University of Calgary. Department of Physics and Astronomy.) ; Calsamiglia Costa, John (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
We study the quantumness of correlations for ensembles of bi- and multi-partite systems and relate it to the task of quantum data hiding. Quantumness is here intended in the sense of minimum average disturbance under local measurements. [...]

Recent techniques in x-ray free electron lasers allow the generation of highly coherent, intense x-ray pulses with time lengths on the order of femtoseconds. Here we explore the possibilities of using such x-ray pulses to control matter based on coherence. [...]

11 p, 1.5 MB Thermometry precision in strongly correlated ultracold lattice gases / Mehboudi, Mohammad (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ; Moreno Cardoner, María (Queen's University. Centre for Theoretical Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics) ; De Chiara, Gabriele (Queen's University. Centre for Theoretical Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics) ; Sanpera Trigueros, Anna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
The precise knowledge of the temperature of an ultracold lattice gas simulating a strongly correlated system is a question of both fundamental and technological importance. Here, we address such question by combining tools from quantum metrology together with the study of the quantum correlations embedded in the system at finite temperatures. [...]

Rectified flux motion arising from the collective effect of many interacting vortices is obtained in a specially designed superconducting device. Ratchet structures with different asymmetric pinning potentials are generated by tuning the size, depth, and distribution of triangular blind-antidots in a high-temperature superconducting film. Spatial adiabatic passage processes for ultracold atoms trapped in tunnel-coupled cylindrically symmetric concentric potentials are investigated. Specifically, we discuss the matter-wave analog of the rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) technique for a high fidelity and robust loading of a single atom into a harmonic ring potential from a harmonic trap, and for its transport between two concentric rings.
