17 p, 2.9 MB Polyp expansion of passive suspension feeders : A red coral case study / Rossi, Sergio (Rossi Heras) (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Rizzo, Lucia (Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Italy)) ; Duchêne, Jean-Claude (Université Bordeaux I. Station Marine d'Arcachon, Environnements et Paleoenvironnements Océaniques (France))
Polyp activity in passive suspension feeders has been considered to be affected by several environmental factors such as hydrodynamics, water temperature and food concentration. To better elucidate the driving forces controlling polyp expansion in these organisms and the potential role of particle concentration, the octocoral Corallium rubrum was investigated in accordance with two approaches: (1) high-frequency in- situ observations examining various environmental and biological variables affecting the water column, and (2) video-recorded flume-controlled laboratory experiments performed under a range of environmental and biological conditions, in terms of water temperature, flow speed, chemical signals and zooplankton. [...]

10 p, 14.2 MB The first Oligocene sea turtle (Pan-Cheloniidae) record of South America / Cadena, Edwin A (Yachay Tech. Escuela de Ciencias Geológicas e Ingeniería (Ecuador)) ; Abella, Juan (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Gregori, Maria (Universidad Estatal de la Peninsula de Santa Elena (Ecuador))
The evolution and occurrence of fossil sea turtles at the Pacific margin of South America is poorly known and restricted to Neogene (Miocene/Pliocene) findings from the Pisco Formation, Peru. Here we report and describe the first record of Oligocene (late Oligocene, ~24 Ma) Pan-Cheloniidae sea turtle remains of South America. [...]

24 p, 12.0 MB Merging cranial histology and 3D-computational biomechanics : A review of the feeding ecology of a Late Triassic temnospondyl amphibian / Konietzko-Meier, Dorota (University of Opole. Department of Biosystematics) ; Gruntmejer, Kamil (University of Opole. European Centre of Palaeontology) ; Marcé Nogué, Jordi (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Bodzioch, Adam (University of Opole. Department of Biosystematics) ; Fortuny Terricabras, Josep (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a useful method for understanding form and function. However, modelling of fossil taxa invariably involves assumptions as a result of preservation-induced loss of information in the fossil record. [...]

Perinatal specimens of hadrosaurids discovered in the late 1970's by field crews from Princeton University were significant in providing evidence of the early ontogenetic stages in North American dinosaurs. [...]
