The increasing proportion of persons living alone has come to be emblematic in many ways of modern Western societies because it represents the importance conceded to the individual and to individual goals at the expense, basically, of the family. [...]

Previous research has documented that children who do not live with both biological parents fare somewhat worse on a variety of outcomes than those who do. In this article, which is the introduction to the Special Issue on "Family dynamics and children's well-being and life chances in Europe," we refine this picture by identifying variation in this conclusion depending on the family transitions and subpopulations studied. This paper presents trends in parental wealth homogamy across union cohorts formed between 1987 and 2013 in Denmark. Using high-quality register data on the wealth of parents during the year of union formation, we show that the correlation between partners' levels of parental wealth is considerably lower compared to estimates from earlier research on other contexts. 38 p, 1.5 MB Global trends in lifespan inequality, 1950-2015 / Permanyer, Iñaki (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Scholl, Nathalie
Using data from the UN World Population Prospects, we document global trends in lifespan inequality from 1950 until 2015. Our findings indicate that (i) there has been a sustained decline in overall lifespan inequality, (ii) adult lifespan variability has also declined, but some plateaus and trend reversals have been identified, (iii) lifespan inequality among the elderly has increased virtually everywhere, (iv) most of the world variability in age-at-death can be attributed within-country variability. 41 p, 1.9 MB Educational assortative mating as a determinant of changing household income inequality : a 22-country study / Boertien, Diederik (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics) ; Permanyer, Iñaki (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics)
In a search for determinants of societal levels of income inequality, scholars have suggested that homogamy within marriages and cohabiting relationships is a potentially important driver of inequality. [...]
In a second stage of the analysis we examine why changes in educational assortative mating mattered relatively little for changes in income inequality. A major hypothesis proposed in earlier research is that changes in educational homogamy have not been large enough to affect income inequality. [...]

In this paper, we address the question to what extent the subjective well-being of same sex couples changed following the legalization of same-sex marriage in England and Wales in March 2014. We employ data from the Annual Population Survey to examine changes in several aspects of well-being during the period before and after legalization. [...]

This article aims to explore how overall education inequality is articulated in four basic constituent parts (inequality among women and men, inequality favoring men and inequality favoring women) and how these parts have jointly evolved over time in the world and its regions. [...]

5 p, 388.6 KB A new approach to length of life inequality measurement / Permanyer, Iñaki
The uncertainty around the limits of human lifespan has led researchers to implicitly treat that variable as unbounded. In this paper we categorize that variable as 'uncertainly bounded' and study the corresponding methodological and substantive implications for our understanding of lifespan variation. [...]
