Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are the enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, eicosanoids that play a major role in many physiological processes. Particularly, prostaglandins are known to trigger inflammation, and COX-2, the enzyme isoform associated with this inflammatory response, catalyzes the cyclooxidation of arachidonic acid, leading to prostaglandin G2. Cyclobutane thymine dimers, the major photoproducts produced in UV-irradiated DNA, are the main causative agents for mutagenesis and skin cancer. This lesion can also be initiated under UVA radiation, involving triplet-triplet energy transfer mechanism from a photosensitizer to the thymine nucleobase. [...]

(Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia)
Ordered nanopillars have been used as a smart configuration to design and fabricate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors. Importantly, these nanostructures can be integrated within microfluidic channels as a novel opportunity to enhance the response of biosensors and also to control the fluid flow by modifying the wettability surface of the walls. Laboratory for Energy and NanoScience)
Univocal conclusions around the wettability of graphene exposed to environmental conditions remain elusive despite the recent efforts of several research groups. The main discrepancy rests on the question of whether a graphene monolayer (GML) is transparent or not to water and more generally what the role is that the substrate plays in determining the degree of wetting of the GML.
