Centre de Recerca en Economia i Salut) ; Jiménez-Martín, Sergi (Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Barcelona Graduate School of Economics) ; Del Rey Canteli, Elena (Universitat de Girona)
In this paper we explore the effects of a labor market reform that changed the statutory minimum working age in Spain in 1980. In particular, the reform raised the statutory minimum working age from 14 to 16 years old, while the minimum age for attaining compulsory education was kept at 14 until 1990. [...]

36 p, 369.7 KB Wage setting in the Colombian manufacturing industry / Agudelo, Sonia A. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Sala Lorda, Hèctor (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
We show that wage setting in the Colombian manufacturing industry is not fundamentally driven by labor productivity in contrast to the standard theoretical prediction. On the contrary, internal institutional arrangements – payroll taxation, the minimum wage or the price wedge between manufacturing and consumption prices – together with a higher exposure to international trade – connected to the increasing globalization of the Colombian economy – appear as the crucial drivers. [...]

We study short- and long-term wage effects of two important elements of non-wage labour costs: firing costs and payroll taxes. We exploit a reform that introduced substantial reduction in these two provisions for unemployed workers aged less than thirty and over forty five years. [...]

20 p, 217.1 KB Polarisation and health / Blanco-Perez, Cristina (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Ramos Morilla, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia Aplicada)
This paper examines the effect of income polarisation on individual health. We argue that polarisation captures much better the social tension and conflict that underlie some of the pathways linking income disparities and individual health, and which have been traditionally proxied by inequality. [...]

Starting from the axiomatisation of polarisation contained in Esteban and Ray (1994) and Chakravarty and Majumdar (2001) we investigate whether people's perceptions of income polarisation is consistent with the key axioms. [...]

Economic theory and empirical evidence clearly show that social exclusion dimensions are inter-related. Notwithstanding that, dimensions are usually assumed independent from one another in the economics literature. [...]

This paper shows how distance functions, a tool typically employed in production economics to measure the distance between a set of inputs and a set of outputs, can be employed to approximate a composite measure encompassing the many dimensions of well-being. [...]
